Reply to Faustus the Manichaean

We can now answer the question, how we know that these books were written by the apostles. In a word, we know this in the same way that you know that the books whose authority you are so deluded as to prefer were written by Manichaeus. For, suppose some one should raise a question on this point, and should contend, in arguing with you, that the books which you attribute to Manichaeus are not of his authorship; your only reply would be, to ridicule the absurdity of thus gratuitously calling in question a matter confirmed by successive testimonies of such wide extent. As, then, it is certain that these books are the production of Manichaeus, and as it is ridiculous in one born so many years after to start objections of his own, and so raise a discussion on the point; with equal certainty may we pronounce it absurd, or rather pitiable, in Manichaeus or his followers to bring such objections against writings originally well authenticated, and carefully handed down from the times of the apostles to our own day through a constant succession of custodians.

Que si vous nous demandez comment nous savons que ces écrits sont des Apôtres, nous vous répondrons en peu de mots que nous le savons, comme vous savez vous-mêmes que les écrits que vous préférez misérablement à une telle autorité sont de Manès. En effet, si quelqu'un élevait un doute sur ce point et vous contredisait par scrupule, en vous disant que les livres que vous attribuez à Manès ne sont point de lui : que feriez-vous? Ne ririez-vous pas comme d'un fou, de l'homme qui émettrait un doute aussi insolent contre un fait établi sur une telle succession de témoignages, sur une chaîne de traditions aussi fortement serrée? Or, de même qu'il est certain que ces livres sont de Manès, et que quiconque viendrait, si longtemps après, vous susciter une querelle là-dessus, passerait pour un être ridicule; ainsi est-il certain que Manès ou les Manichéens sont ridicules, ou plutôt dignes de compassion, d'oser soulever des objections de ce genre contre une autorité si solide, maintenue et transmise par des successions indubitables, depuis le temps des Apôtres jusqu'à nos jours.
