28.

Christ appears to me in Joseph, who was persecuted and sold by his brethren, and after his troubles obtained honor in Egypt. We have seen the troubles of Christ in the world, of which Egypt was a figure, in the sufferings of the martyrs. And now we see the honor of Christ in the same world which He subdues to Himself, in exchange for the food which He bestows. Christ appears to me in the rod of Moses, which became a serpent when cast on the earth as a figure of His death, which came from the serpent. Again, when caught by the tail it became a rod, as a figure of His return after the accomplishment of His work in His resurrection to what He was before, destroying death by His new life, so as to leave no trace of the serpent. We, too, who are His body, glide along in the same mortality through the folds of time; but when at last the tail of this course of things is laid hold of by the hand of judgment that it shall go no further, we shall be renewed, and rising from the destruction of death, the last enemy, we shall be the sceptre of government in the right hand of God.

CHAPITRE XXVIII. JOSEPH, LA VERGE DE MOÏSE, SYMBOLES DU CHRIST.

C'est lui-même qui s'offre à moi dans la personne de Joseph, présenté et vendu par ses frères, puis, après les heures d'épreuve, honoré en Egypte[^1]. Nous avons vu, en effet, les épreuves du Christ dans ce monde (dont l'Egypte était le symbole), par les diverses souffrances des martyrs ; et maintenant nous voyons le Christ honoré dans ce même monde, et amenant tout à ses pieds par la distribution de son froment. C'est le Christ que je vois dans la verge de Moïse, qui, jetée à terre, devient serpent, et figure la mort de la terre, causée par le serpent. Mais le serpent, saisi par la queue, redevient verge[^2], pour nous apprendre qu'à la fin, après avoir achevé son oeuvre, le Christ reprend sa première forme en ressuscitant, quand, la mort étant détruite par la réparation de la vie, il ne reste plus rien du serpent. Nous aussi, qui sommes son corps, nous suivons dans cette même mortalité la pente glissante du temps ; mais à la fin, la queue du siècle, pour ainsi dire, étant saisie par la main, c'est-à-dire par la puissance du jugement, pour ne plus retomber, nous serons restaurés, et la mort, le dernier ennemi, étant détruite, nous ressusciterons[^3] et nous serons la verge royale dans la droite de Dieu.
