14.

We add, also, and say, "Thy will be done, as in heaven so in earth;" not that God should do what He wills, but that we may be able to do what God wills. For who resists God, that He may not do what He wills? But since we are hindered by the devil from obeying with our thought and deed God's will in all things, we pray and ask that God's will may be done in us; and that it may be done in us we have need of God's good will, that is, of His help and protection, since no one is strong in his own strength, but he is safe by the grace and mercy of God. And further, the Lord, setting forth the infirmity of the humanity which He bore, says, "Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me;" and affording an example to His disciples that they should do not their own will, but God's, He went on to say, "Nevertheless not as I will, but as Thou wilt." ¹ And in another place He says, "I came down from heaven not to do my own will, but the will of Him that sent me." ² Now if the Son was obedient to do His Father's will, how much more should the servant be obedient to do his Master's will! as in his epistle John also exhorts and instructs us to do the will of God, saying, "Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world is the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the ambition of life, which is not of the Father, but of the lust of the world. And the world shall pass away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever, even as God also abideth for ever." ³ We who desire to abide for ever should do the will of God, who is everlasting.

Über das Gebet des Herrn (BKV)

Kap. 14. Ebenso flehen wir in der dritten Bitte darum, daß Gottes Wille in uns geschehe und wir mit Gottes Hilfe unseren Willen gehorsam ihm unterordnen.

Wir fügen auch noch die weiteren Worte hinzu: „Dein Wille geschehe im Himmel und auf Erden", nicht etwa, damit Gott tun kann, was er will, sondern damit wir zu tun vermögen, was Gott will. Denn wer hindert Gott daran, seinen Willen zu tun? Weil hingegen wir vom Teufel verhindert werden, in unserem Tun und Trachten in allen Stücken Gott zu gehorchen, so beten und flehen wir darum, daß i n u n s der Wille Gottes geschehe. Damit dieser aber in uns geschieht, brauchen wir Gottes Willen, das heißt: seine Hilfe und seinen Schutz. Denn niemand ist stark aus eigener Kraft, sondern nur Gottes Gnade und Barmherzigkeil bietet sicheren Schutz. So sagte auch der Herr, indem er die Schwäche der menschlichen Natur verriet, die er an sich trug: „Vater, wenn es möglich ist, so gehe dieser Kelch an mir vorüber!"¹ Um aber seinen Jüngern ein Beispiel zu geben, daß sie nicht ihren, sondern Gottes Willen tun sollten, setzte er noch die Worte hinzu: „Doch nicht, was ich will, sondern was Du willst"² . Und an einer anderen Stelle sagt er: „Ich bin nicht vom Himmel herabgestiegen, um meinen Willen zu tun, sondern den S. 178 Willen dessen, der mich gesandt hat"³ . Wenn nun aber der Sohn gehorchte und den Willen seines Vaters tat, wieviel mehr muß dann der Knecht gehorchen, um den Willen seines Herrn zu erfüllen? So ermahnt und lehrt uns ja auch Johannes in seinem Briefe, den Willen Gottes zu tun, indem er sagt: „Liebet nicht die Welt noch das, was in der Welt ist! Wenn jemand die Welt liebt, so ist die Liebe des Vaters nicht in ihm; denn alles, was in der Welt ist, ist Begehrlichkeit des Fleisches und Begehrlichkeit der Augen und weltliche Hoffart, die nicht vom Vater ist, sondern von der Begehrlichkeit der Welt. Und die Welt wird vergehen und ihre Begehrlichkeit; wer aber den Willen Gottes tut, bleibet in Ewigkeit, wie auch Gott bleibet in Ewigkeit"⁴ . Wenn wir also in Ewigkeit bleiben wollen, müssen wir den Willen Gottes tun, der ewig ist.
