The Encyclical Epistle of the Church at Smyrna Concerning the Martyrdom of the Holy Polycarp

Chapter X.--Polycarp confesses himself a Christian.

And when the proconsul yet again pressed him, and said, "Swear by the fortune of Caesar," he answered, "Since thou art vainly urgent that, as thou sayest, I should swear by the fortune of Caesar, and pretendest not to know who and what I am, hear me declare with boldness, I am a Christian. And if you wish to learn what the doctrines ¹ of Christianity are, appoint me a day, and thou shalt hear them." The proconsul replied, "Persuade the people." But Polycarp said, "To thee I have thought it right to offer an account [of my faith]; for we are taught to give all due honour (which entails no injury upon ourselves) to the powers and authorities which are ordained of God. ² But as for these, I do not deem them worthy of receiving any account from me." ³

Aber der Prokonsul drang von neuem in ihn und sagte: „Schwöre doch beim Glücksgenius des Kaisers!“ Polykarp antwortete: „Wenn du dir etwa einbildest, ich würde einen Schwur tun beim Genius des Kaisers, wie du dich auszudrücken beliebst, dann stellst du dich, als sei dir unbekannt, wer ich eigentlich bin. Höre drum, was ich mit allem Freimut sage: Ich bin ein Christ! Falls dich aber der Inhalt des Christentums interessiert, so bestimme einen S. 30 Tag, und du sollst es vernehmen!“ Da sagte der Prokonsul: „Mach das lieber dem Pöbel da weis!“ Polykarp aber gab zur Antwort: „Dich, Prokonsul, habe ich einer Erklärung würdig erachtet. Denn wir sind belehrt worden, den von Gott eingesetzten Obrigkeiten und Gewalten in aller Ehrfurcht so weit entgegenzukommen, als es sich ohne Schaden für die Seele machen läßt. Den Pöbel da halte ich jedoch nicht für würdig, meine Glaubensverteidigung anzuhören! “
