The Pastor of Hermas

Chap. VII.

"I rejoice, sir," I said, "to hear this explanation." "Hear," again he replied: "Keep this flesh pure and stainless, that the Spirit which inhabits it may bear witness to it, and your flesh may be justified. See that the thought never arise in your mind that this flesh of yours is corruptible, and you misuse it by any act of defilement. If you defile your flesh, you will also defile the Holy Spirit; and if you defile your flesh [and spirit], you will not live." ¹ "And if any one, sir," I said, "has been hitherto ignorant, before he heard these words, how can such a man be saved who has defiled his flesh?" "Respecting former sins ² of ignorance," he said, "God alone is able to heal them, for to Him belongs all power. [But be on your guard now, and the all-powerful and compassionate God will heal former transgressions ³ ], if for the time to come you defile not your body nor your spirit; for both are common, and cannot be defiled, the one without the other: keep both therefore pure, and you will live unto God."

7. Kap. Bewahre deinen Leib unbefleckt!

1. „Es war für mich eine Freude, o Herr, diese Deutung zu hören.“ „So merke jetzt auf! Bewahre S. 240 deinen Leib rein und unbefleckt, damit der in ihm wohnende Geist ihm Zeugnis geben könne und so dein Leib gerechtfertigt werde. 2. Gib acht, dass in deinem Herzen sich nicht einmal der Gedanke rege, dein Leib sei vergänglich, und dass du ihn nicht missbrauchest zu einer Befleckung. Wenn du nämlich deinen Leib befleckst, befleckst du auch den Heiligen Geist; wenn du aber den Geist befleckst, wirst du das Leben nicht haben.“ 3. Da stellte ich die Frage: „Wenn aber, Herr, vor der Kenntnis dieser Worte eine Torheit begangen würde, wie kann ein Mensch gerettet werden, der seinen Leib befleckt hat?“ „Für frühere aus Unwissenheit begangene Fehltritte kann Gott allein Heilung bieten; denn er besitzt alle Macht. 4. [Aber von jetzt ab hüte dich, und der allmächtige Herr wird in seiner Barmherzigkeit für die früheren Taten der Unwissenheit Heilung bieten,] wenn du in Zukunft weder dein Fleisch noch den Geist befleckest. Denn die beiden gehören zusammen, und es kann nicht das eine ohne das andere befleckt werden. Bewahre also beide rein, und du wirst in Gott leben.“
