13. Über die Keuschheit.

Über das sittliche Verhalten ferner lehrt uns die Hl. Schrift nicht bloß im Werk nicht zu sündigen, sondern selbst auch nicht in Gedanken, daß wir im Herzen nicht einmal an etwas Schlechtes denken oder mit den Augen ein fremdes Weib begehren. Salomon also, der König und Prophet war, sagt: „Deine Augen sollen gerade sehen und deine Augenlider Gerechtes winken; gerade Pfade mache dir für deine Füße“¹. Die Stimme des Evangeliums aber belehrt noch eindringlicher über die Keuschheit, wenn sie sagt: „Jeder, der ein fremdes Weib ansieht, so daß er es begehrt, hat in seinem Herzen schon die Ehe gebrochen. Und wer eine Geschiedene heiratet, bricht die Ehe, und wer seine Frau entläßt, ausgenommen des Ehebruchs halber, macht sie zur Ehebrecherin“². Salomon sagt ferner: „Kann jemand Feuer in seinem Kleide tragen, ohne seine Kleidung zu verbrennen? Oder kann jemand auf feurigen Kohlen einhergehen, ohne seine Füße zu verbrennen? So wird auch derjenige, welcher zu einem Weibe geht, das unter einem Manne steht, nicht straflos ausgehen“³.

Chapter XIII.--Of Chastity.

And concerning chastity, the holy word teaches us not only not to sin in act, but not even in thought, not even in the heart to think of any evil, nor look on another man's wife with our eyes to lust after her. Solomon, accordingly, who was a king and a prophet, said: "Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee: make straight paths for your feet." ¹ And the voice of the Gospel teaches still more urgently concerning chastity, saying: "Whosoever looketh on a woman who is not his own wife, to lust after her, hath committed adultery with her already in his heart." ² "And he that marrieth," says [the Gospel], "her that is divorced from her husband, committeth adultery; and whosoever putteth away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery." ³ Because Solomon says: "Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned? Or can one walk upon hot coals, and his feet not be burned? So he that goeth in to a married woman shall not be innocent." ⁴
