Theophilus to Autolycus

Chapter IX.--Christian Doctrine of God and His Law.

Now we also confess that God exists, but that He is one, the creator, and maker, and fashioner of this universe; and we know that all things are arranged by His providence, but by Him alone. And we have learned a holy law; but we have as lawgiver Him who is really God, who teaches us to act righteously, and to be pious, and to do good. And concerning piety ¹ He says, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I am the Lord thy God." ² And of doing good He said: "Honour thy father and thy mother; that it may be well with thee, and that thy days may be long in the land which I the Lord God give thee." Again, concerning righteousness: "Thou shalt not commit adultery. Thou shalt not kill. Thou shalt not steal. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, nor his land, nor his man-servant, nor his maid-servant, nor his ox, nor his beast of burden, nor any of his cattle, nor anything that is thy neighbour's. Thou shalt not wrest the judgment of the poor in his cause. ³ From every unjust matter keep thee far. The innocent and righteous thou shalt not slay; thou shalt not justify the wicked; and thou shalt not take a gift, for gifts blind the eyes of them that see and pervert righteous words." Of this divine law, then, Moses, who also was God's servant, was made the minister both to all the world, and chiefly to the Hebrews, who were also called Jews, whom an Egyptian king had in ancient days enslaved, and who were the righteous seed of godly and holy men--Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob. God, being mindful of them, and doing marvellous and strange miracles by the hand of Moses, delivered them, and led them out of Egypt, leading them through what is called the desert; whom He also settled again in the land of Canaan, which afterwards was called judaea, and gave them a law, and taught them these things. Of this great and wonderful law, which tends to all righteousness, the ten heads are such as we have already rehearsed.

9. Heiligkeit der christlichen Lehre; Lehre von der Vorsehung; sittliche Erhabenheit des Dekalogs.

Wir aber bekennen, daß ein Gott sei, aber nur einer, der Schöpfer, Gründer, Bildner dieser ganzen Welt; wir wissen, daß alles durch eine Vorsehung regiert werde, aber von ihm allein; wir haben ein hl. Gesetz gelernt, haben aber als Gesetzgeber den wahrhaftigen Gott, der uns auch lehrt, gerecht zu handeln, gottesfürchtig zu leben und Gutes zu tun. Und zwar sagt er in Betreff der Gottesfurcht: Du sollst keine fremden Götter neben mir haben. Du sollst dir kein Bild machen noch ein Gleichnis von allem, was im Himmel oben, oder was auf der Erde unten, oder was in den Wassern unter der Erde ist. Du sollst sie nicht anbeten noch ihnen dienen; denn ich bin der Herr dein Gott¹. Und über die Übung des Guten spricht er: Ehre deinen Vater und deine Mutter, auf daß es dir wohl ergehe und du lange lebest im Lande, das ich, der Herr dein Gott, dir gebe. Ferner in Betreff der Gerechtigkeit sagt er: „Du sollst nicht ehebrechen, du sollst nicht töten, du sollst nicht stehlen, du sollst kein falsches Zeugnis geben gegen deinen Nächsten, du sollst nicht begehren deines Nächsten Weib, du sollst nicht begehren sein Haus, noch Feld, noch Knecht, noch Magd, noch Ochsen, noch Zugtier, noch alles Vieh, noch alles, was deinem Nächsten gehört. Du sollst das Urteil des Armen beim Richten desselben nicht verkehren, du sollst jedes ungerechte Wort meiden; du sollst den Unschuldigen und Gerechten nicht töten; du sollst den Gottlosen nicht für gerecht erklären und keine Geschenke nehmen; denn die Geschenke verblenden die Augen der Sehenden und S. 86 verkehren die Sache der Gerechten“². Der Vermittler dieses göttlichen Gesetzes nun war Moses, der Diener Gottes, zwar für die ganze Welt im allgemeinen, insbesondere aber für die Hebräer, auch Juden genannt, die anfangs der König von Ägypten in Sklaverei gehalten, eine gerechte Nachkommenschaft gottesfürchtiger und heiliger Männer, nämlich Abrahams, Isaaks und Jakobs. Doch erinnerte Gott sich ihrer, tat außerordentliche Zeichen und Wunder durch Moses, befreite sie und führte sie heraus aus Ägypten und hin durch die sogenannte Wüste; setzte sie auch in den Besitz des Landes Chananäa, das später Judäa genannt wurde, und gab ihnen ein Gesetz und lehrte sie jene Satzungen. Von dem Gesetze also, das erhaben und wunderbar in Hinsicht auf jede Gerechtigkeit ist, sind die oben erwähnten, wie gesagt, die zehn Hauptgebote.
