Theophilus to Autolycus

Chapter XVII.--Accurate Information of the Christians.

It behoved, therefore, that he should the rather become a scholar of God in this matter of legislation, as he himself confessed that in no other way could he gain accurate information than by God's teaching him through the law. And did not the poets Homer and Hesiod and Orpheus profess that they themselves had been instructed by Divine Providence? Moreover, it is said that among your writers there were prophets and prognosticators, and that those wrote accurately who were informed by them. How much more, then, shall we know the truth who are instructed by the holy prophets, who were possessed by ¹ the Holy Spirit of God! On this account all the prophets spoke harmoniously and in agreement with one another, and foretold the things that would come to pass in all the world. For the very accomplishment of predicted and already consummated events should demonstrate to those who are fond of information, yea rather, who are lovers of truth, that those things are really true which they declared concerning the epochs and eras before the deluge: ² to wit, how the years have run on since the world was created until now, so as to manifest the ridiculous mendacity of your authors, and show that their statements are not true.

17. Die Christen kennen sie aus den Propheten.

Man muß also in der Gesetzgebung bei Gott in die Schule gehen, wie Plato ja selbst gesteht, daß es unmöglich sei, die klare Wahrheit anderswie zu finden, außer wenn Gott sie durch sein Gesetz lehrt. Behaupten ferner nicht auch die Dichter Homer, Hesiod und Orpheus, sie hätten ihre Kenntnisse von der göttlichen Vorsehung? Ja man sagt sogar, zu den Zeiten der Schriftsteller hätten Seher und Propheten gelebt, und von diesen belehrt, hätten jene die Wahrheit geschrieben. Um wieviel mehr also können wir die Wahrheit wissen, die wir von den hl. Propheten belehrt sind, welche den HI. Geist Gottes in sich aufgenommen hatten! Deswegen stimmen die Aussprüche aller Propheten, durch die sie die künftigen Schicksale der ganzen Welt vorherverkündeten, so vollständig zusammen. Denn der redliche Forscher oder besser der Freund der Wahrheit kann gerade durch das Eintreffen der vorher angekündigten und bereits geschehenen Ereignisse die Überzeugung gewinnen, daß ihre Angaben über die Zeiten und Zeitläufe vor der Sintflut, wie die Jahre von der Erschaffung der Welt bis jetzt verliefen, wirklich S. 93 wahr seien, so daß die lügenhafte Flunkerei der Schriftsteller und die Unwahrheit ihrer Angaben offenbar werden.
