Against Heresies

1.

They do not believe that He, who is God above all, formed by His Word, in His own territory, as He Himself pleased, the various and diversified [works of creation which exist], inasmuch as He is the former of all things, like a wise architect, and a most powerful monarch. But they believe that angels, or some power separate from God, and who was ignorant of Him, formed this universe. By this course, therefore, not yielding credit to the truth, but wallowing in falsehood, they have lost the bread of true life, and have fallen into vacuity ¹ and an abyss of shadow. They are like the dog of Aesop, which dropped the bread, and made an attempt at seizing its shadow, thus losing the [real] food. It is easy to prove from the very words of the Lord, that He acknowledges one Father and Creator of the world, and Fashioner of man, who was proclaimed by the law and the prophets, while He knows no other, and that this One is really God over all; and that He teaches that that adoption of sons pertaining to the Father, which is eternal life, takes place through Himself, conferring it [as He does] on all the righteous.

Gegen die Häresien (BKV)

Daß also ein Gott über allem ist, daß er in seinem Reich nach seinem Wohlgefallen die verschiedenen und unähnlichen Dinge durch sein Wort erschaffen hat, da er als der weise Baumeister und höchste König der Schöpfer von allem ist, das wollen sie nicht glauben. Wohl aber glauben sie, daß die Engel oder eine Kraft, die von Gott verschieden ist und ihn nicht kannte, dieses Weltall gemacht hat. Indem sie auf diese Weise nun der Wahrheit nicht glaubten, in der Lüge aber sich wälzten, verloren sie das Brot des Lebens und fielen in die Leere und Tiefe des Schattens hinein. Es ging ihnen wie dem Hunde des Äsop, der das Brot fahren ließ, nach dem Schatten aber haschte und so seine Speise verlor. Es S. 119ist aber auch gerade aus den Worten des Herrn leicht zu zeigen, daß er den einen Vater als den Schöpfer der Welt und Bildner des Menschen bekennt, den, der vom Gesetz und von den Propheten verkündigt ist, und daß er einen andern nicht kennt, und daß dieser der Allerhöchste ist. Er lehrte auch, daß durch ihn der Vater die Annahme an Kindesstatt, welche das ewige Leben ist, allen Gerechten verleiht.
