Against Heresies

The Apostle Peter, therefore, after the resurrection of the Lord, and His assumption into the heavens, being desirous of filling up the number of the twelve apostles, and in electing into the place of Judas any substitute who should be chosen by God, thus addressed those who were present: "Men [and] brethren, this Scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost, by the mouth of David, spake before concerning Judas, which was made guide to them that took Jesus. For he was numbered with us: ¹ ... Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein; ² and, His bishoprick let another take;" ³ --thus leading to the completion of the apostles, according to the words spoken by David. Again, when the Holy Ghost had descended upon the disciples, that they all might prophesy and speak with tongues, and some mocked them, as if drunken with new wine, Peter said that they were not drunken, for it was the third hour of the day; but that this was what had been spoken by the prophet: "It shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh, and they shall prophesy." ⁴ The God, therefore, who did promise by the prophet, that He would send His Spirit upon the whole human race, was He who did send; and God Himself is announced by Peter as having fulfilled His own promise.

S. 246Wie also der Apostel Petrus nach der Auferstehung und Himmelfahrt des Herrn die Zahl der zwölf Apostel ergänzen und an die Stelle des Judas aus den Anwesenden einen andern von Gott erwählten einsetzen wollte, da sprach er: „Ihr Männer, Brüder, es musste diese Schrift erfüllt werden, welche der Heilige Geist durch den Mund Davids über Judas vorausgesagt hat, der sich zum Anführer jener machte, die Jesum ergriffen, da er uns beigezählt war¹ . Verlassen sei seine Wohnung und niemand möge darin weilen² , und sein Vorsteheramt möge ein anderer erhalten³ “, und gemäß diesen Aussprüchen Davids machte er die Zahl der Apostel wieder vollständig. Als dann der Heilige Geist auf die Apostel herabgekommen war, so daß alle prophezeiten und in Sprachen redeten und einige sie verspotteten, gleich als ob sie voll wären des süßen Weines, da sagte Petrus, sie seien nicht trunken, da es erst die dritte Stunde des Tages wäre, sondern es sei, wie der Prophet gesprochen habe: „Es wird in den letzten Tagen sein, spricht der Herr, da werde ich von meinem Geist ausgießen über alles Fleisch“⁴ . Der Gott also, der durch den Propheten versprochen hat, daß er seinen Geist auf das menschliche Geschlecht herabsenden werde, der hat ihn auch geschickt, und von demselben Gott verkündet Petrus, daß er sein eigenes Versprechen auch erfüllt habe.
