Against Heresies

3.

And again, the law did not forbid those who were hungry on the Sabbath-days to take food lying ready at hand: it did, however, forbid them to reap and to gather into the barn. And therefore did the Lord say to those who were blaming His disciples because they plucked and ate the ears of corn, rubbing them in their hands, "Have ye not read this, what David did, when himself was an hungered; how he went into the house of God, and ate the shew-bread, and gave to those who were with him; which it is not lawful to eat, but for the priests alone?" ¹ justifying His disciples by the words of the law, and pointing out that it was lawful for the priests to act freely. For David had been appointed a priest by God, although Saul persecuted him. For all the righteous possess the sacerdotal rank. ² And all the apostles of the Lord are priests, who do inherit here neither lands nor houses, but serve God and the altar continually. Of whom Moses also says in Deuteronomy, when blessing Levi, "Who said unto his father and to his mother, I have not known thee; neither did he acknowledge his brethren, and he disinherited his own sons: he kept Thy commandments, and observed Thy covenant." ³ But who are they that have left father and mother, and have said adieu to all their neighbours, on account of the word of God and His covenant, unless the disciples of the Lord? Of whom again Moses says, "They shall have no inheritance, for the Lord Himself is their inheritance." ⁴ And again, "The priests the Levites shall have no part in the whole tribe of Levi, nor substance with Israel; their substance is the offerings (fructifications) of the Lord: these shall they eat." ⁵ Wherefore also Paul says, "I do not seek after a gift, but I seek after fruit." ⁶ To His disciples He said, who had a priesthood of the Lord, ⁷ to whom it was lawful when hungry to eat the ears of corn, ⁸ "For the workman is worthy of his meat." ⁹ And the priests in the temple profaned the Sabbath, and were blameless. Wherefore, then, were they blameless?

Because when in the temple they were not engaged in secular affairs, but in the service of the Lord, fulfilling the law, but not going beyond it, as that man did, who of his own accord carried dry wood into the camp of God, and was justly stoned to death. ¹⁰ "For every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit shall be hewn down, and cast into the fire;" ¹¹ and "whosoever shall defile the temple of God, him shall God defile." ¹²

Ebensowenig verbot das Gesetz, daß die Hungrigen am Sabbat Speise aus dem, was bei der Hand war, nahmen; zu ernten und in die Scheune zu sammeln war aber verboten. Als daher einige seine Schüler schalten, daß sie Ähren abrissen und aßen, sagte der Herr ihnen: „Habt ihr nicht gelesen, was David tat, als er hungrig war, wie er einging in das Haus des Herrn und von den Schaubroten aß, die zu essen nur den Priestern S. 345erlaubt war, und auch denen gab, die bei ihm waren?“¹ So entschuldigte er durch die Worte des Gesetzes seine Jünger und zeigte an, daß es den Priestern erlaubt war, frei zu handeln. Ein kundiger Priester aber vor dem Herrn war David gewesen, obschon Saul ihn verfolgte. Denn alle Gerechten haben priesterlichen Rang. Priester aber sind alle Apostel des Herrn, die hier keine Äcker noch Häuser ererben, aber immer dem Altare und Gott dienen. Von ihnen sagt auch Moses im Deuteronomium bei der Segnung Levis: „Wer seinem Vater sagt und seiner Mutter: Ich kenne dich nicht, und seine Brüder nicht kennt und seinen Söhnen entsagt, der hat deine Gebote beachtet und deinen Bund bewahrt“² . Wer aber hat Vater und Mutter verlassen und auf alle Verwandten verzichtet wegen des Herrn Wort und seines Bundes, wenn nicht die Jünger des Herrn? Von Ihnen sagt wiederum Moses: „Ein Erbteil werden sie nicht haben, denn der Herr selbst wird ihr Erbe sein“³ . Und abermals: „Es sollen die levitischen Priester im ganzen Stamme Levi keinen Teil noch Besitztum mit Israel haben; die Opferfrüchte des Herrn sind ihre Besitzungen, diese sollen sie essen“⁴ . Darum sagt auch Paulus: „Ich suche kein Geschenk, sondern ich suche Frucht“⁵ . Da nun die Jünger des Herrn levitisches Besitztum hatten, war es ihnen erlaubt, wenn sie Hunger hatten, von den Saaten ihre Speisen zu nehmen: „Denn der Arbeiter ist seiner Speise wert“⁶ . Auch die Priester entweihten im Tempel den Sabbat und waren nicht schuldig. Warum waren sie nicht schuldig? Weil sie im Tempel nicht weltlichen, sondern des Herrn Dienst versahen, sodaß sie das Gesetz erfüllten, aber nicht übertraten wie der, welcher aus sich selbst trockenes Holz in das Lager des Herrn trug und mit Recht gesteinigt wurde. Denn „jeder Baum, der nicht gute Frucht bringt, wird abgehauen und ins Feuer geworfen werden“⁷ . Und „wer immer den Tempel Gottes schändet, den wird Gott schänden“⁸ .
