Against Heresies

2.

For the law, since it was laid down for those in bondage, used to instruct the soul by means of those corporeal objects which were of an external nature, drawing it, as by a bond, to obey its commandments, that man might learn to serve God. But the Word set free the soul, and taught that through it the body should be willingly purified. Which having been accomplished, it followed as of course, that the bonds of slavery should be removed, to which man had now become accustomed, and that he should follow God without fetters: moreover, that the laws of liberty should be extended, and subjection to the king increased, so that no one who is converted should appear unworthy to Him who set him free, but that the piety and obedience due to the Master of the household should be equally rendered both by servants and children; while the children possess greater confidence [than the servants], inasmuch as the working of liberty is greater and more glorious than that obedience which is rendered in [a state of] slavery.

S. 359Das Gesetz war nämlich für Knechte gegeben; durch seine äußerlichen, körperlichen Vorschriften unterwies es die Seele, indem es wie durch ein Band heranziehen wollte zur Beobachtung der Gebote, damit der Mensch lernen sollte, Gott zu gehorchen. Das Wort aber befreite die Seele und lehrte, wie sich der Körper durch sie freiwillig reinige. Demgemäß war es nötig, die Bande wegzunehmen, an die der Mensch sich schon gewöhnt hatte, und ungefesselt Gott zu folgen. Erweitern aber mußten sich die Gebote der Freiheit und wachsen mußte die Unterwürfigkeit gegen den König, damit niemand wieder umkehre und dessen unwürdig erscheine, der ihn befreit hat. Die Ergebenheit und Unterwürfigkeit gegen den Hausvater sollte für die Knechte und Kinder die gleiche sein, die größere Zu versicht aber sollten die Kinder haben, da größer und ruhmreicher die Werke der Freiheit sind als der Gehorsam in der Knechtschaft.
