8.

He instances, in proof of this, the case of infants who have just been born, the cry of whom, as soon as they have issued from the womb, is in accordance with the sound of every one of these elements. As, then, he says, the seven powers glorify the Word, so also does the complaining soul of infants. ¹ For this reason, too, David said: "Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings Thou hast perfected praise;" ² and again: "The heavens declare the glory of God." ³ Hence also it comes to pass, that when the soul is involved in difficulties and distresses, for its own relief it calls out, "Oh" (O), in honour of the letter in question, ⁴ so that its cognate soul above may recognise [its distress], and send down to it relief.

Den Beweis nimmt er von den neugeborenen Kindern, die, nachdem sie aus dem Mutterleib hervorgegangen sind, den Laut jedes dieser Buchstaben aussprechen. Wie nun die sieben Kräfte den Logos preisen, so preist auch die Seele der Neugeborenen den Markus, indem sie ihn beweint und bejammert. Darum sprach auch David: „Aus dem Munde der Kleinen und Säuglinge hast du Lob bereitet“¹ und wiederum: „Die Himmel preisen die Ehre Gottes“² . Deshalb ruft auch die Seele, wenn Leiden und Not zu ihrer Läuterung über sie kommen, „O“ zum Zeichen des Lobes, damit die obere Seele, die doch mit ihr verwandt ist, ihre Hilfe herabsende.
