10.

Stephanus ferner, der von den Aposteln zuerst zum Diakon gewählt wurde, und der zuerst von allen Menschen den Leidensspuren des Herrn gefolgt ist, in dem er wegen des Bekenntnisses Christi zuerst getötet wurde, redete gleichfalls freimütig zum Volke, lehrte es und sprach: „Der Gott der Herrlichkeit erschien unserm Vater Abraham und sprach zu ihm: Zieh fort aus deinem Lande und von deiner Verwandtschaft und komme in das Land, das ich dir zeigen werde! Und er versetzte ihn in dieses Land, welches ihr auch jetzt bewohnet, und er gab ihm keinen Erbteil darin, auch nicht einen Fuß breit, sondern versprach, es ihm zum Besitz zu geben und seinem Samen nach ihm. Der Herr aber sprach zu ihm folgendermaßen: Sein Same wird Fremdling sein im fremden Lande und in Knechtschaft gebracht und gepeinigt werden vierhundert Jahre. Aber das Volk, dem sie dienen werden, werde ich richten, spricht der Herr. Und alsdann werden sie wegziehen und mir dienen an diesem Orte. Und er schloß mit ihm den Bund der Beschneidung, und so zeugte er Isaak“¹ . Und seine übrigen Worte verkünden denselben Gott, der mit Joseph und den Patriarchen war, und der mit Moses gesprochen hat.

Against Heresies

10.

And still further, Stephen, who was chosen the first deacon by the apostles, and who, of all men, was the first to follow the footsteps of the martyrdom of the Lord, being the first that was slain for confessing Christ, speaking boldly among the people, and teaching them, says: "The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham, ... and said to him, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and come into the land which I shall show thee; ... and He removed him into this land, wherein ye now dwell. And He gave him none inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on; yet He promised that He would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him. ... And God spake on this wise, That his seed should sojourn in a strange land, and should be brought into bondage, and should be evil-entreated four hundred years; and the nation whom they shall serve will I judge, says the Lord. And after that shall they come forth, and serve me in this place. And He gave him the covenant of circumcision: and so [Abraham] begat Isaac." ¹ And the rest of his words announce the same God, who was with Joseph and with the patriarchs, and who spake with Moses.
