Töricht also in der Tat und unglücklich, wer das so Klare und Offenbare nicht einsehen will, sondern das Licht der Wahrheit sieht und wie der Ödipus der Tragödie sich selbst blendet. Und wie die nicht geübten Kämpfer in der Palästra, wenn sie mit andern ringen, S. 506einen Teil des Körpers fest umklammern und deswegen fallen und im Fallen noch zu siegen glauben, weil sie jenen eifrig festhalten, dessen Glied sie gleich im Anfang umschlangen, aber zu dem Fall noch ausgelacht werden, so machen es die Häretiker mit dem Worte Pauli: „Fleisch und Blut können das Reich Gottes nicht erben.“ An die beiden Worte sich klammernd, haben sie den Apostel nicht begriffen, noch die Kraft der beiden Ausdrücke sich klar gemacht, und indem sie sich nun allein an die beiden nackten Worte halten, sterben sie an ihnen und werfen den ganzen Heilsplan Gottes um, so weit sie es können.

Against Heresies

Vain, therefore, and truly miserable, are those who do not choose to see what is so manifest and clear, but shun the light of truth, blinding themselves like the tragic OEdipus. And as those who are not practised in wrestling, when they contend with others, laying hold with a determined grasp of some part of [their opponent's] body, really fall by means of that which they grasp, yet when they fall, imagine that they are gaining the victory, because they have obstinately kept their hold upon that part which they seized at the outset, and besides falling, become subjects of ridicule; so is it with respect to that [favourite] expression of the heretics: "Flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God;" while taking two expressions of Paul's, without having perceived the apostle's meaning, or examined critically the force of the terms, but keeping fast hold of the mere expressions by themselves, they die in consequence of their influence (peri autas), overturning as far as in them lies the entire dispensation of God.
