Salvation of the Rich Man

IX.

Jesus, accordingly, does not charge him with not having fulfilled all things out of the law, but loves him, and fondly welcomes his obedience in what he had learned; but says that he is not perfect as respects eternal life, inasmuch as he had not fulfilled what is perfect, and that he is a doer indeed of the law, but idle at the true life. Those things, indeed, are good. Who denies it? For "the commandment is holy," ¹ as far as a sort of training with fear and preparatory discipline goes, leading as it did to the culmination of legislation and to grace. ² But Christ is the fulfilment "of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth;" and not as a slave making slaves, but sons, and brethren, and fellow-heirs, who perform the Father's will.

1. Jesus wirft ihm nun nicht etwa vor, daß er nicht alle Gebote des Gesetzes erfüllt habe,¹ sondern gewinnt ihn lieb und freut sich über seinen willigen Gehorsam in dem, was er gelernt hatte; aber er sagt ihm, daß er noch unvollkommen für das ewige Leben sei, da er nicht Vollkommenes erfüllt habe, und zwar ein Täter des Gesetzes sei, aber durch all sein Tun das wahre Leben noch nicht gewonnen habe. 2. Sicherlich sind auch jene Gebote gut (wer wollte das leugnen? Denn das Gebot ist heilig"),² da sie (in ihrer Wirkung) bis zu einer gewissen mit Furcht verbundenen Erziehung und einer Art von Vorbildung auf die höchste durch Christus vermittelte Gesetzgebung³ und Gnade gelangen; "Erfüllung des Gesetzes⁴ aber ist Christus zur Gerechtigkeit jedem, der glaubt",⁵ indem er diejenigen, die den Willen S. 238 des Vaters erfüllen,⁶ nicht wie ein Sklave⁷ zu Sklaven, sondern zu Söhnen und Brüdern und Miterben macht.⁸
