2. Jede Auflehnung gegen die geistliche Obrigkeit, wie gegen die weltliche, ist sehr sträflich.

Erwägen wir nun, Geliebte, worin der Ruhm der Aufständischen bestehe, und welches ihre Verurtheilung. Wenn Derjenige, welcher gegen Könige sich empört, die Todesstrafe verdient, sei's Sohn oder Freund, um wie viel mehr der, welcher sich gegen Priester auflehnt! Denn um wie viel höher das Priesterthum als das Königthum steht, welches über die Seele die Entscheidung hat, um so viel sträflicher ist es, sich gegen jenes aufzulehnen, obgleich keine Auflehnung ungestraft ausgeht. Denn weder Absalon und Abedadan sind unbestraft geblieben,¹ noch Core² und Dathan. Jene haben nämlich gegen David, ihre weltliche Obrigkeit, Diese gegen Moses, ihren priesterlichen Vorgesetzten, sich erhoben. Auch sie sagten Böses aus: Absalon über seinen Vater David, welchen er einen ungerechten Richter schalt, und zu Jeglichem sagte: „Deine Reden sind gut, aber Niemand ist, der dich hört und dir Recht verschafft. Wer wird mich zum Fürsten S. 179 machen?³ Abedadan aber sprach: „Ich habe keinen Theil an David noch Erbe am Sohne Jesse.„⁴ Er hielt es für entehrend, von David regiert zu werden, von welchem Gott sprach: „ Ich habe David gefunden, den Sohn Jesse, einen Mann nach meinem Herzen, der meinen Willen in Allem thun wird.“⁵ Dathan aber und Abiron und Koriten sprachen zu Moses: „Ist's dir zu wenig, daß du uns aus Agypten herausgeführet, aus einem Lande, das von Milch und Honig floß, und daß du unsere Augen ausgeschnitten und du über uns herrschest?„⁶ Und sie versammelten gegen ihn die ganze Gemeinde. Und die Koriten sagten: „Hat der Herr nur durch Moses geredet, und hat er nur dem Aaron das Priesterthum gegeben?⁷ Ist nicht dle ganze Gememde heilig und warum thut nur Aaron Priesterdienst? Und zu Aaron sprach Einer: „Wer hat dich zum Fürsten und Richter gesetzt über uns?“⁸

II. That It is Not Lawful to Rise Up Either Against the Kingly or the Priestly Office.

Let us therefore, beloved, consider what sort of glory that of the seditious is, and what their condemnation. For if he that rises up against kings is worthy of punishment, even though he be a son or a friend, how much more he that rises up against the priests! For by how much the priesthood is more noble than the royal power, as having its concern about the soul, so much has he a greater punishment who ventures to oppose the priesthood, than he who ventures to oppose the royal power, although neither of them goes unpunished. For neither did Absalom nor Abdadan¹ escape without punishment; nor Corah and Dathan.² The former rose against David, and strove concerning the kingdom; the latter against Moses, concerning pre-eminence. And they both spake evil; Absalom of his father David, as of an unjust judge, saying to every one: "Thy words are good, but there is no one that will hear thee, and do thee justice. Who will make me a ruler?"³ But Abdadan: "I have no part in David, nor any inheritance in the son of Jesse."⁴ It is plain that he could not endure to be under David's government, of whom God spake: "I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after my heart, who will do all my commands."⁵ But Dathan and Abiram, and the followers of Corah, said to Moses: "Is it a small thing that thou hast brought us out of the land of Egypt, out of a land flowing with milk and honey? And why hast thou put out our eyes? And wilt thou rule over us?" And they gathered together against him a great congregation; and the followers of Corah said: "Has God spoken alone to Moses? Why is it that He has given the high-priesthood to Aaron alone? Is not all the congregation of the Lord holy? And why is Aaron alone possessed of the priesthood?"⁶ And before this, one said: "Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us?"⁷
