42. Wie und wann das Gedächtniß der Verstorbenen zu feiern sei; und daß aus ihrer Hinterlassenschaft die Armen zu beschenken seien.

Für die Verstorbenen soll der dritte Tag gefeiert werden, in Psalmen, Lesungen und Gebeten, mit Rück- S. 307 sicht auf den, welcher am dritten Tag auferstanden ist; deßgleichen der neunte zur Erinnerung für die Lebenden und Verstorbenen; und auch der vierzigste Tag, gemäß des alten Vorbildes, denn in solcher Weise trauerte das Volk um Moses;¹ endlich der Jahrestag zum Gedächtniß des Verstorbenen selbst. Aus seinem Vermögen aber sollen die Armen beschenkt werden zu seiner Erinnerung.

XLII. How and When We Ought to Celebrate the Memorials of the Faithful Departed, and that We Ought Then to Give Somewhat Out of Their Goods to the Poor.

Let the third day of the departed be celebrated with psalms, and lessons, and prayers, on account of Him who arose within the space of three days; and let the ninth day be celebrated in remembrance of the living, and of the departed; and the fortieth¹ day according to the ancient pattern: for so did the people lament Moses, and the anniversary day in memory of him.² And let alms be given to the poor out of his goods for a memorial of him.³
