15. Der Priester soll aber doch die sündhaften Handlungen nicht übersehen noch vorschnell im Strafen sein.

Sehet, geliebteste Kinder, „der Herr unser Gott ist barmherzig und gerecht, gut und menschenfreundlich und hält den Schuldigen nicht für unschuldig.”¹ Den Bekehrten nimmt er auf und belebt ihn und läßt Diejenigen davon kein Ärgerniß nehmen, welche die Sünder unerbittlich verurtheilen und ganz und gar ausschließen und auch nicht mit ihnen Gemeinschaft machen, sie nicht ermahnen und trösten wollen, wodurch sie doch zur Buße geführt werden könnten. Diesen gegenüber spricht Gott durch Isaias zu den Bischöfen: „Tröstet, tröstet mein Volk, ihr Priester, redet zum Herzen Jerusalems!”² Ihr müßt also auf den Propheten hören, die Sünder tröstlich ermahnen und zur Buße antreiben und in ihnen gute Hoffnung erwecken und nicht argwöhnen, daß ihr wegen des Erbarmens mit ihnen auch ihrer Sünden theilhaftig geworden. Nehmt die Büßer willig auf, freuet euch über ihre Bekehrung, urtheilet über die Sünder mit Milde und Schonung. Denn wenn du einen Wanderer am Flusse, welcher wankt, mit den Segelstangen zu Boden wirfst und in den Fluß hinabstoßest, statt ihm vielmehr die Hand zu reichen, so hast du deinen Bruder getödtet. Daher sollst du lieber dem Wankenden die Rechte reichen, damit er nicht völlig zu Grunde gehe, damit auch das Volk ermahnt werde und der Sünder nicht unrettbar verloren sei. Du darfst aber, o Bischof, die schlechten Handlungen des Volkes nicht übersehen noch die Büßer verächtlich behandeln, damit du nicht unerfahren die Heerde des Herrn verderbest und seinen S. 49 Namen, den er aufs Neue seinem Volke gegeben, gering schätzest und du den nämlichen Vorwurf auf dich ladest, wie jene alten Hirten, von welchen Gott zu Jeremias sagte: „Viele Hirten haben meinen Weinberg verwüstet und mein Erbtheil befleckt;”³ und an einer andern Stelle: „Über die Hirten ist mein Zorn entflammt, und über die Lämmer zürne ich;”⁴ und anderswo: „Ihr Priester verachtet meinen Namen.”⁵

XV. That a Priest Must Neither Overlook Offences, Nor Be Rash in Punishing Them.

Observe, you who are our beloved sons, how merciful yet righteous the Lord our God is; how gracious and kind to men; and yet most certainly "He will not acquit the guilty:"¹ though He welcomes the returning sinner, and revives him, leaving no room for suspicion to such as wish to judge sternly and to reject offenders entirely, and to refuse to vouchsafe to them exhortations which might bring them to repentance. In contradiction to such, God by Isaiah says to the bishops: "Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, ye priests: speak comfortably to Jerusalem." It therefore behoves you, upon hearing those words of His, to encourage those who have offended, and lead them to repentance, and afford them hope, and not vainly to suppose that you shall be partakers of their offences on account of such your love to them. Receive the penitent with alacrity, and rejoice over them, and with mercy and bowels of compassion judge the sinners. For if a person was walking by the side of a river, and ready to stumble, and thou shouldest push him and thrust him into the river, instead of offering him thy hand for his assistance, thou wouldst be guilty of the murder of thy brother; whereas thou oughtest rather to lend thy helping hand as he was ready to fall, lest he perish without remedy, that both the people may take warning, and the offender may not utterly perish. It is thy duty, O bishop, neither to overlook the sins of the people, nor to reject those who are penitent, that thou mayst not unskilfully destroy the Lord's flock, or dishonour His new name, which is imposed on His people, and thou thyself beest reproached as those ancient pastors were, of whom God speaks thus to Jeremiah: "Many shepherds have destroyed my vineyard; they have polluted my heritage."² And in another passage: "My anger is waxed hot against the shepherds, and against the lambs shall I have indignation."³ And elsewhere: "Ye are the priests that dishonour my name."⁴
