XXXV. A Prayer, with Thanksgiving, Declarative of God's Providence Over the Beings He Has Made.

Great art thou, O Lord Almighty, and great is Thy power, and of Thy understanding there is no number. Our Creator and Saviour, rich in benefits, long-suffering, and the bestower of mercy, who dost not take away Thy salvation from Thy creatures: for Thou art good by nature, and sparest sinners, and invitest them to repentance; for admonition is the effect of Thy bowels of compassion. For how should we abide if we were required to come to judgment immediately, when, after so much long-suffering, we hardly get clear of our miserable condition? The heavens declare Thy dominion, and the earth shakes with earthquakes, and, hanging upon nothing, declares Thy unshaken stedfastness. The sea raging with waves, and feeding a flock of ten thousand creatures, is bounded with sand, as standing in awe at Thy command, and compels all men to dry out: "How great are Thy works, O Lord! in wisdom hast Thou made them all: the earth is full of Thy creation."¹ And the bright host of angels and the intellectual spirits say to Palmoni,² "There is but one holy Being;"³ and the holy seraphim, together with the six-winged cherubim, who sing to Thee their triumphal song, cry out with never-ceasing voices, "Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts! heaven and earth are full of Thy glory;"⁴ and the other multitudes of the orders, angels archangels, thrones, dominions, principalities, authorities, and powers cry aloud, and say, "Blessed be the glory of the Lord out of His place."⁵ But Israel, Thy Church on earth, taken out of the Gentiles, emulating the heavenly powers night and day, with a full heart and a willing soul sings, "The chariot of God is ten thousandfold thousands of them that rejoice: the Lord is among them in Sinai, in the holy place."⁶ The heaven knows Him who fixed it as a cube of stone, in the form of an arch, upon nothing, who united the land and water to one another, and scattered the vital air all abroad, and conjoined fire therewith for warmth, and the comfort against darkness. The choir of stars strikes us with admiration, declaring Him that numbers them, and showing Him that names them; the animals declare Him that puts life into them; the trees show Him that makes them grow: all which creatures, being made by Thy word, show forth the greatness of Thy power. Wherefore every man ought to send up an hymn from his very soul to Thee, through Christ, in the name of all the rest, since He has power over them all by Thy appointment. For Thou art kind in Thy benefits, and beneficent in Thy bowels of compassion, who alone art almighty: for when Thou willest, to be able is present with Thee; for Thy eternal power both quenches flame, and stops the mouths of lions, and tames whales, and raises up the sick, and overrules the power of all things, and overturns the host of enemies, and casts down a people numbered in their arrogance. Thou art He who art in heaven, He who art on earth, He who art in the sea, He who art in finite things, Thyself unconfined by anything. For of Thy majesty there is no boundary; for it is not ours, O Lord, but the oracle of Thy servant, who said, "And thou shalt know in thine heart that the Lord thy God He is God in heaven above, and on earth beneath, and there is none other besides Thee:"⁷ for there is no God besides Thee alone, there is none holy besides Thee, the Lord, the God of knowledge, the God of the saints, holy above all holy beings; for they are sanctified by Thy hands. Thou art glorious, and highly exalted, invisible by nature, and unsearchable in Thy judgments; whose life is without want, whose duration can never alter or fail, whose operation is without toil, whose greatness is unlimited, whose excellency is perpetual, whose habitation is inaccessible, whose dwelling is unchangeable, whose knowledge is without beginning, whose truth is immutable, whose work is without assistants, whose dominion cannot be taken away, whose monarchy is without succession, whose kingdom is without end, whose strength is irresistible, whose army is very numerous: for Thou art the Father of wisdom, the Creator of the creation, by a Mediator, as the cause; the Bestower of providence, the Giver of laws, the Supplier of want, the Punisher of the ungodly, and the Rewarder of the righteous; the God and Father of Christ, and the Lord of those that are pious towards Him, whose promise is infallible, whose judgment without bribes, whose sentiments are immutable, whose piety is incessant, whose thanksgiving is everlasting, through whom⁸ adoration is worthily due to Thee from every rational and holy nature.

35. Dankgebet für die göttliche Güte und Barmherzigkeit.

Groß bist du, allmächtiger Herr, und groß ist deine Macht, und deiner Weisheit ist kein Maß.¹ Du Schöpfer und Heiland, der du reich an Gnaden und langmüthig bist und Barmherzigkeit erweisest, der du die Sorge für die Wohl- S. 241 fahrt deiner Geschöpfe nicht aufgibst; dein Wesen ist lauter Güte, du schonst der Sünder und rufest sie zur Buße; denn um den Sünder mahnen zu können, übst du Erbarmen. Wie würden wir wohl bestehen, wenn wir alsogleich zur Ablegung der Rechenschaft gerufen würden, nachdem du so lange in Geduld und Langmuth uns erwartet hast und wir uns von unserer Schwäche noch kaum erholt haben? Deine Macht verkünden die Himmel und die zitternde Erde, die gefestigt und ausgebreitet ist über das Nichts. Das wogende Meer, welches unzählige Thiere ernährt und von Sand eingeschlossen ist, gehorcht deinem Winke. Die ganze Schöpfung muß ausrufen: „Wie groß sind deine Werke, o Herr! Alles hast du mit Weisheit gemacht; voll ist die Erde von deinen Geschöpfen.„² Und die glänzenden Schaaren der Engel und die Geistwesen sagen: „E i n e r ist heilig, dem Bhelmoni.“³ Und die heiligen Seraphim zugleich mit den Cherubim, welche sechs Flügel haben, singen dir den Siegessang und rufen mit nicht endenden Stimmen: „Heilig, heilig, heilig ist der Herr, Gott der Heerschaaren; voll ist der Himmel und die Erde von deiner Herrlichkeit.„⁴ Und die übrigen Schaaren der Rangordnungen, die Engel, Erzengel, Thronen, Herrschaften, Fürstentümer, Mächte, Kräfte rufen: „Gelobt sei die Herrlichkeit des Herrn in ihrer Ordnung.“⁵ Israel aber, deine Kirche hienieden, die aus allen Völkern auserwählte, wetteifert mit den himmlischen Mächten und singt bei Tag und Nacht mit Herz und Mund: „Der Wagen Gottes ist zehntausendfach, Frohlockender sind Tausende; der Herr ist unter ihnen, auf Sinai im Heiligthum.„⁶ Der Himmel kennt Denjenigen, welcher ihn über dem Nichts ausgespannt hat wie ein Steingewölbe,⁷ und welcher Erde und Wasser unter einander verbunden,⁸ welcher Luft und S. 242 Feuer geschaffen hat, um den erschaffenen Wesen Nahrung, Wärme und Licht tröstend zu spenden. Der Chor der Sterne flößt Erstaunen ein, hinweisend auf den, welcher sie zählt und ihnen ihre Namen gibt, gleichwie die lebenden Wesen auf den hindeuten, der sie belebt, und die Bäume auf den, der sie hervorgebracht hat. All' das ist durch dein Wort in's Dasein getreten und verkündet die Herrlichkeit deiner Macht. Darum muß jeglicher Mensch, weil durch dich Herr der Schöpfung, von ganzem Herzen durch Christi Vermittlung dir Lob und Dank für alle diese Wohlthaten darbringen. Du bist ja bereit zum Wohlthun und freigebig im Erbarmen. Du allein bist allmächtig, deinem Wollen steht die Macht zur Seite. Deine ewig dauernde Macht löscht das Feuer aus und verschließt den Rachen der Löwen,⁹ sie sänftigt den Wallfisch¹⁰und macht Kranke gesund, sie vernichtet feindliche Heeresmassen¹¹ und ein ganzes Volk, welches, von Stolz aufgeblasen, zur Zählung geschritten war.¹² Du bist im Himmel, auf Erden, im Meere, in jeglichem Raume, ohne selbst von einem Raume eingeschlossen zu sein; „denn deiner Größe ist kein Ende.¹³ Dieß ist aber nicht unser Wort, o Herr, sondern das deines Dieners, welcher sagt: „Und du wirst in deinem Herzen erkennen, daß der Herr dein Gott ist, Gott im Himmel oben und auf der Erde unten und kein anderer ausser ihm.“¹⁴ Ausser dir gibt es keinen Gott, ausser dir ist Niemand heilig; du bist ein Gott des Wissens,¹⁵der Gott der Heiligen, heilig über alle Heilige; denn unter deiner Leitung gelangten sie zur Heiligkeit. Lobwürdig und herrlich bist du,¹⁶ unsichtbar nach deinem Wesen, unerforschlich in deinen Ratschlüssen.¹⁷ Dein Leben dauert unverändert und ungeschwächt fort, unermüdet ist dein Wirken, unbegrenzt deine Größe, ungeschwächt deine Anmuth, unzugänglich deine Wohnung, keinem S. 243 Wechsel unterworfen dein Wohnsitz, ewig dauert dein Wissen, deine Wahrheit besteht immerdar, dein Werk ist ohne fremde Mitwirkung vollendet worden, deine Macht ist keiner Nachstellung ausgesetzt, in deinem Reiche gibt es keine Thronfolge, dein Reich ist ohne Ende, seine Kraft ist unüberwindlich, seine Streitmacht ohne Zahl. Du bist der Vater der Weisheit und Grund und Ursache der durch den Mittler gesetzten Schöpfung. Du waltest in deiner Vorsehung, gibst Gesetze, hilfst allen Bedürfnissen ab, strafst die Bösen und belohnst die Guten. Du bist der Gott und Vater Christi und aller Derer Herr, welche Jesu getreu dienen, jenem Jesu, der untrüglich ist in seinen Verheissungen, unbestechlich bei seinem Urtheil, dessen Gesinnung durch Überredungskünste keine Veränderung erleidet: ihm gegenüber soll unser kindlich frommer Sinn nie erlöschen, das Dankgefühl nie ersterben. Durch ihn wird dir die gebührende Anbetung dargebracht von jedem vernünftigen und heiligen Wesen.
