Chapitre LXIII

Un jour qu’il était sorti pour aller visiter les monastères, on le pria de monter sur un vaisseau et d’y faire oraison avec les solitaires. Lui seul y sentit une puanteur si grande qu’elle lui était insupportable. Les mariniers assurèrent qu’elle provenait des poissons et de la salaison qui étaient dans le bateau. Il soutenait au contraire qu’elle ne venait pas de là. Et comme il parlait encore, un jeune homme possédé qui était monté auparavant dans le bateau et s’y était caché, commença à jeter de grands cris. Sur quoi Antoine conjura le démon au nom de Notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ. Il sortit et cet homme fut délivré. Ce qui fit connaître à tous ceux qui étaient présents que cette mauvaise odeur ne provenait que du démon.

Afterwards, on another occasion, having descended to the outer cells, he was asked to enter a vessel and pray with the monks, and he alone perceived an exceedingly unpleasant smell. But those on board said that the stench arose from the fish and salt meat in the ship. He replied however, the smell was different from that; and while he was speaking, a youth with an evil spirit, who had come and hidden himself in the ship, cried out. But the demon being rebuked in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ departed from him, and the man became whole. And all knew that the evil smell arose from the demon.
