53. Kapitel.

Wenige Tage darauf arbeitete er, denn er hielt darauf, tätig zu sein; da trat jemand an die Türe und zog S. 740 an dem Bande, mit dem er beschäftigt war; er nähte nämlich Körbe und gab diese den Besuchern für das, was sie ihm brachten. Antonius stand auf und erblickte ein Wesen, das zwar bis zu den Schenkeln wie ein Mensch aussah, das aber Beine und Füße hatte wie ein Esel.¹ Antonius bekreuzigte sich nur und sprach: "Ich bin ein Knecht Christi. Wenn du gegen mich gesandt wurdest, siehe, hier bin ich." Aber das Tier mit seinen Dämonen entfloh so schnell, daß es infolge seiner Eile zu Fall kam und verendete. Der Tod des Tieres aber bedeutete den Sturz der Dämonen; denn alles mögliche hatten sie versucht, ihn aus der Wüste zu vertreiben, doch sie hatten es nicht vermocht.

53.

A few days after, as he was working (for he was careful to work hard), some one stood at the door and pulled the plait which he was working, for he used to weave baskets, which he gave to those who came in return for what they brought him. And rising up he saw a beast like a man to the thighs but having legs and feet like those of an ass. And Antony only signed himself and said, ‘I am a servant of Christ. If thou art sent against me, behold I am here.’ But the beast together with his evil spirits fled, so that, through his speed, he fell and died. And the death of the beast was the fall of the demons. For they strove in all manner of ways to lead Antony from the desert and were not able.
