Against the Valentinians

Chapter XXX.--The Lax and Dangerous Views of This Sect Respecting Good Works. That These are Unnecessary to the Spiritual Man.

For this reason it is that they neither regard works ¹ as necessary for themselves, nor do they observe any of the calls of duty, eluding even the necessity of martyrdom on any pretence which may suit their pleasure. For this rule, (they say), is enjoined upon the animal seed, in order that the salvation, which we do not possess by any privilege of our state, ² we may work out by right ³ of our conduct. Upon us, who are of an imperfect nature, ⁴ is imprinted the mark of this (animal) seed, because we are reckoned as sprung from the loves of Theletus, ⁵ and consequently as an abortion, just as their mother was. But woe to us indeed, should we in any point transgress the yoke of discipline, should we grow dull in the works of holiness and justice, should we desire to make our confession anywhere else, I know not where, and not before the powers of this world at the tribunals of the chief magistrates! ⁶ As for them, however, they may prove their nobility by the dissoluteness ⁷ of their life and their diligence ⁸ in sin, since Achamoth fawns on them as her own; for she, too, found sin no unprofitable pursuit. Now it is held amongst them, that, for the purpose of honouring the celestial marriages, ⁹ it is necessary to contemplate and celebrate the mystery always by cleaving to a companion, that, is to a woman; otherwise (they account any man) degenerate, and a bastard ¹⁰ to the truth, who spends his life in the world without loving a woman or uniting himself to her. Then what is to become of the eunuchs whom we see amongst them?

30. Cap. Einiges aus der Sittenlehre der Valentinianer.

Daher halten sie die guten Werke nicht nötig für sich, beobachten die sittlichen Obliegenheiten nicht und werden auch mit der Pflicht des Martyriums durch irgend eine beliebige Interpretation fertig. Dasselbe sei, sagen sie, ein Gesetz, das dem psychischen Samen vorgeschrieben sei, damit wir unser Heil, welches wir nicht [wie sie] durch ein Privilegium unseres Standes besitzen, durch Hilfe von Handlungen erwerben. Denn uns ist der Stempel des letztgenannten Samens aufgedrückt und wir sind unvollkommenen Wesens, weil wir zur Liebe des Theletus und darum zur Missgeburt gerechnet werden, wie ihre Mutter. Uns gilt das Wehe, wenn wir in irgend einem Stücke das Joch der Sittenzucht übertreten, wenn wir in den Werken der Heiligkeit und Gerechtigkeit träge sind, wenn wir unser Bekenntnis anderswo als vor den Mächten dieser Welt und den S. 124 Richterstühlen der Oberpräsidenten abzulegen auch nur wünschen sollten. Sie aber behaupten ihren Adel trotz ihres ganz ordinären Lebens und sündhaften Treibens, indem Achamoth, die selbst auch aus ihren Sünden Nutzen zog, den Ihrigen günstig ist. Es wird nämlich, um die oberen Ehen zu ehren, bei ihnen der Grundsatz aufgestellt, man müsse immer an das Geheimnis denken und es verherrlichen, indem man dem Gefährten, d. h. dem Weibe, anhange. Der, welcher in der Welt lebe, aber kein Weib liebe und sich mit keinem Weibe verbinde, sei entartet und kein echter Anhänger der Wahrheit.
