CHAPITRE IV.

LE SACRIFICE N’EST DU QU’A DIEU SEUL.

Sans parler en ce moment des autres devoirs religieux, il n’y a personne au monde qui osât dire que le sacrifice soit dû à un autre qu’à Dieu. Il est vrai qu’on a déféré à des hommes beaucoup d’honneurs qui n’appartiennent qu’à Dieu, soit par un excès d’humilité, soit par une pernicieuse flatterie; mais, outre qu’on ne cessait pas de regarder comme des hommes ceux à qui on donnait ces témoignages d’honneur, de vénération, et; si l’on veut, d’adoration, qui jamais a pensé devoir offrir des sacrifices à un autre qu’à celui qu’il savait, ou croyait, ou voulait faire- croire être Dieu? Or, que le sacrifice soit une pratique très-ancienne du culte de Dieu, c’est ce qui est assez prouvé par les sacrifices de Caïn et d’Abel, le premier rejeté de Dieu, le second regardé d’un oeil favorable.

Chapter 4.--That Sacrifice is Due to the True God Only.

But, putting aside for the present the other religious services with which God is worshipped, certainly no man would dare to say that sacrifice is due to any but God. Many parts, indeed, of divine worship are unduly used in showing honor to men, whether through an excessive humility or pernicious flattery; yet, while this is done, those persons who are thus worshipped and venerated, or even adored, are reckoned no more than human; and who ever thought of sacrificing save to one whom he knew, supposed, or feigned to be a god? And how ancient a part of God's worship sacrifice is, those two brothers, Cain and Abel, sufficiently show, of whom God rejected the elder's sacrifice, and looked favorably on the younger's.
