Chapter 19.--Of Those Who Promise Impunity from All Sins Even to Heretics, Through Virtue of Their Participation of the Body of Christ.

So, too, there are others who promise this deliverance from eternal punishment, not, indeed, to all men, but only to those who have been washed in Christian baptism, and who become partakers of the body of Christ, no matter how they have lived, or what heresy or impiety they have fallen into. They ground this opinion on the saying of Jesus, "This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that if any man eat thereof, he shall not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If a man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever." ¹ Therefore, say they, it follows that these persons must be delivered from death eternal, and at one time or other be introduced to everlasting life.

CHAPITRE XIX.

DE CEUX QUI PROMETTENT L’IMPUNITÉ DE TOUS LEURS PÉCHÉS, MÊME AUX HÉRÉTIQUES, A CAUSE DE LEUR PARTICIPATION AU CORPS DE JÉSUS-CHRIST.

Il y en a d’autres qui ne promettent pas à tous les hommes cette délivrance des supplices éternels, mais seulement à ceux qui, ayant reçu le baptême, participent au corps de Jésus-Christ, de quelque manière d’ailleurs qu’ils aient vécu, et en quelque hérésie, en quelque impiété qu’ils soient tombés. Et ils se fondent sur ce que le Sauveur a dit: « Voici le pain qui est descendu du ciel, afin que celui qui en mangera ne meure point. Je suis le pain descendu du ciel: si quelqu’un mange de ce pain, il vivra éternellement¹ ». Il faut donc nécessairement, disent-ils, qu’à ce prix les hérétiques soient délivrés de la mort éternelle, et qu’ils passent quelque jour à l’éternelle félicité.
