CHAPITRE IV. IL EN DISCUTE UNE ET LA REJETTE.

Que leur montrerons-nous donc? Sera-ce le passage que vous citez ordinairement, où leur Dieu parlant à Moïse, dit : « Je leur susciterai, du milieu de leurs frères, un prophète semblable à toi[^1] ? » Mais le Juif sait parfaitement que cela ne se rapporte pas au Christ, et nous ne pouvons nous-mêmes le croire : car le Christ n'est pas un prophète, ni un prophète semblable à Moïse; puisque l'un était pécheur et l'autre saint; l'un né d'un couple et l'autre d'une vierge, selon vous, et, selon moi, pas même d'une vierge; l'un meurt sur une montagne pour avoir offensé son Dieu[^2], l'autre, pour le bon plaisir de son Père, souffre une mort volontaire[^3]. Comment donc serait-il un prophète semblable à Moïse? Evidemment le juif nous accusera aussitôt d'ineptie, ou nous convaincra de mensonge.

What, then, shall we point to? Shall it be that passage which you often quote where the God of Moses says to him: "I will raise up unto them from among their brethren a prophet like unto thee?" ¹ But the Jew can see that this does not refer to Christ, and there is every reason against our thinking that it does. Christ was not a prophet, nor was He like Moses: for Moses was a man, and Christ was God; Moses was a sinner, and Christ sinless; Moses was born by ordinary generation, and Christ of a virgin according to you, or, as I hold, not born at all: Moses, for offending his God, was put to death on the mountain; and Christ suffered voluntarily, and the Father was well pleased in Him. If we were to assert that Christ was a prophet like Moses, the Jew would either deride us as ignorant or pronounce us untruthful.
