Contre Fauste, le manichéen
CHAPITRE XXX. POURQUOI LE CHRIST EST VENU ACCOMPLIRLA LOI. LES ANCIENS JUSTES EN VOYAIENT LE BUT.
Mais puisque tous ces excellents préceptes du Seigneur, que Fauste voulait opposer aux anciens livres des Hébreux, se trouvent dans ces mêmes livres : pourquoi le Seigneur est-il venu, non abolir, mais accomplir la loi, sinon pour que, à l'exception des figures qui n'étaient que des promesses et que la manifestation de la réalité a accomplies et fait disparaître, ces mêmes préceptes, qui rendaient la loi sainte, juste et bonne[^3], s'accomplissent en nous, non pas selon la vétusté de la lettre qui commandait et aggravait les péchés de l'orgueil par le crime de rébellion, mais dans la nouveauté de l'esprit qui aide et qui affranchit par la grâce du salut les humbles qui confessent leur impuissance? Au fond, si ces préceptes sublimes sont contenus dans les anciens livres, le but auquel ils se rapportent y reste caché; et pourtant c'était en vue de ce but que vivaient les saints; ils en prévoyaient la future manifestation, et, suivant les besoins des temps, ou ils le voilaient sous la forme prophétique, ou ils le comprenaient sagement sous le voile même de la prophétie.

Since, then, all these excellent precepts of the Lord, which Faustus tries to prove to be contrary to the old books of the Hebrews, are found in these very books, the only sense in which the Lord came not to destroy the law, but to fulfill it, is this, that besides the fulfillment of the prophetic types, which are set aside by their actual accomplishment, the precepts also, in which the law is holy, and just, and good, are fulfilled in us, not by the oldness of the letter which commands, and increases the offence of the proud by the additional guilt of transgression, but by the newness of the Spirit, who aids us, and by the obedience of the humble, through the saving grace which sets us free. For, while all these sublime precepts are found in the ancient books, still the end to which they point is not there revealed; although the holy men who foresaw the revelation lived in accordance with it, either veiling it in prophecy as suited the time, or themselves discovering the truth thus veiled.
