CHAPITRE III. LES DEUX PÈRES DE JOSEPH.

Ici tu vas nous dire: Examinons la généalogie dans deux livres de l'Evangile, et voyons si elle est d'accord avec elle-même. Nous avons déjà exposé dans une autre partie de cet ouvrage[^1] ce qu'il y a à dire là-dessus. Tout ce qui vous intrigue, c'est que Joseph a eu deux pères. Quand même la pensée d'un père selon la nature et d'un père par adoption ne se serait pas présentée à votre esprit, vous n'auriez pas dû vous prononcer si facilement et si mal à propos contre une si grande autorité. Mais puisqu'on vous a fait sentir qu'il n'y a là aucune difficulté, croyez simplement à l'Evangile, et cessez plutôt vous-mêmes d'argumenter avec tant de malice et de perversité.

Here you will say, Examine the genealogy as given in the two Gospels, and see if it is consistent with itself. The answer to this has been given already. ¹ Your difficulty is how Joseph could have two fathers. But even if you could not have thought of the explanation, that one was his own father, and the other adopted, you should not have been so ready to put yourself in opposition to such high authority. Now that this explanation has been given you, I call upon you to acknowledge the truth of the Gospel, and above all to cease your mischievous and unreasonable attacks upon the truth.
