CHAPITRE XXIX. SIGNIFICATION MYSTIQUE DE LA SORTIE D'ÉGYPTE, DE LA PIERRE, DE LA MANNE, DE LA NUÉE.

Quant à la sortie du peuple d'Israël de l'Egypte, ce n'est plus moi, mais l'Apôtre qui prend la parole : « Car je ne veux pas que vous ignoriez, mes frères, que nos pères ont été tous sous la nuée et qu'ils ont tous passé la mer; qu'ils ont tous été baptisés sous Moïse, dans la nuée et dans la ruer; qu'ils ont tous mangé la même nourriture spirituelle et qu'ils ont tous bu le même breuvage spirituel; car ils buvaient de la pierre spirituelle qui les suivait: or, cette pierre était le Christ[^4] ». En n'exposant qu'un point, il a donné la clef du reste. Car si le Christ est pierre à cause de sa fermeté, pourquoi ne serait-il pas manne, c'est-à-dire le pain vivant descendu du ciel[^1], qui donne la vie spirituelle à ceux qui le mangent réellement? Car les Juifs, pour avoir pris l'ancienne figure dans le sens charnel, sont morts. Mais quand l'Apôtre dit : « Ils ont mangé la même nourriture spirituelle », il fait voir qu'on doit l'entendre du Christ dans le sens spirituel; de même qu'il explique ce que signifie « le breuvage spirituel », lorsqu'il ajoute : « Or, la pierre était le Christ » : trait de lumière qui éclaire tout le reste. Pourquoi donc le Christ ne serait-il pas aussi la nuée et la colonne, comme étant debout, ferme, l'appui de notre infirmité, lumineux pendant la nuit, sombre pendant le jour; en sorte que ceux qui ne voient pas, voient, et que ceux qui voient, deviennent aveugles[^2] ? La nuée et la mer Rouge, c'est évidemment le baptême consacré par le sang du Christ; les ennemis poursuivent par derrière; les péchés passés disparaissent.

Of the departure of Israel from Egypt, let us hear what the apostle himself says: "I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, and were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, and did all eat the same spiritual meat, and did all drink of the same spiritual drink. For they drank of the spiritual rock which followed them, and that rock was Christ." ¹ The explanation of one thing is a key to the rest. For if the rock is Christ from its stability, is not the manna Christ, the living bread which came down from heaven, which gives spiritual life to those who truly feed on it? The Israelites died because they received the figure only in its carnal sense. The apostle, by calling it spiritual food, shows its reference to Christ, as the spiritual drink is explained by the words, "That rock was Christ," which explain the whole. Then is not the cloud and the pillar Christ, who by His uprightness and strength supports our feebleness; who shines by night and not by day, that they who see not may see, and that they who see may be made blind? In the clouds and the Red Sea there is the baptism consecrated by the blood of Christ. The enemies following behind perish, as past sins are put away.
