33.

To mention only a few things in the times of the kings, at the very outset does not the change in the priesthood when Eli was rejected and Samuel chosen, and in the kingdom when Saul was rejected and David chosen, clearly predict the new priesthood and kingdom to come in our Lord Jesus Christ, when the old, which was a shadow of the new, was rejected? Did not David, when he ate the shew-bread, which it was not lawful for any but the priests to eat, prefigure the union of the kingdom and priesthood in one person, Jesus Christ? In the separation of the ten tribes from the temple while two were left, is there not a figure of what the apostle asserts of the whole nation: "A remnant is saved by the election of grace."? ¹

CHAPITRE XXXIII. NOUVEAU SACERDOCE ET NOUVELLE ROYAUTÉ ANNONCÉS. DIVISION DES TRIBUS.

Et pour ne dire qu'un mot de l'époque des Rois, le sacerdoce dès l'abord transféré à Samuel après la réprobation d'Héli[^1], et le sceptre donné à David, après la réprobation de Saül[^2], ne crient-ils pas bien haut qu'un nouveau sacerdoce et une nouvelle royauté apparaîtront dans Notre-Seigneur Jésus-Christ, l'ancien sacerdoce, qui n'en était que l'ombre, ayant été réprouvé? David lui-même mangeant les pains de proposition, que les prêtres seuls avaient droit de manger[^3], ne figurait-il pas le sacerdoce et l'empire réunis en une seule personne, c'est-à-dire en Jésus-Christ ? Et ces dix tribus séparées du temple, et ces deux tribus qui restent[^4], n'expliquent-elles pas suffisamment ce que l'Apôtre dit de tout ce peuple : « Un reste a été sauvé; selon l'élection de la grâce[^5] ? »
