Reply to Faustus the Manichaean
48.
This is a brief reply to Faustus in behalf of the character of the patriarchs and prophets. It is the reply of the babes of our faith, among whom I would reckon myself, inasmuch as I would not find fault with the life of the ancient saints, even if I did not understand its mystical character. Their life is proclaimed to us with approval by the apostles in their Gospel, as they themselves in their prophecy foretold the future apostles, that the two Testaments, like the seraphim, might cry to one another, "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God of hosts." 1 When Faustus, instead of the vague general accusation which he makes here, condemns particular actions in the lives of the patriarchs and the prophets, the Lord their God, and ours also, will assist me to reply suitably and appropriately to the separate charges. For the present, the reader must choose whether to believe the commendation of the Apostle Paul or the accusations of Faustus the Manichaean. 2

CHAPITRE XLVIII. CONCLUSION. LE SAINT DOCTEUR RÉPONDRA PLUS EN DÉTAIL AUX OBJECTIONS DE FRUSTE SUR LES PATRIARCHES.
Voilà la courte réponse que j'ai à faire à Fauste sur les moeurs des patriarches et des Prophètes, par la voix de nos petits enfants, au nombre desquels je me compte moi-même, pourvu que je ne blâme pas la conduite des saints de l'antiquité, quand même je ne comprendrais pas le côté mystérieux de leur vie. Cette vie, les Apôtres nous l'ont recommandée avec éloge dans leur Evangile, comme ces Prophètes avaient eux-mêmes prédit les Apôtres ; en sorte que les deux Testaments se crient l'un à l'autre, comme les deux Séraphins : « Saint, Saint, Saint est le Seigneur, le Dieu des armées[^1] ». Quand Fauste accusera, non pas d'une manière générale et vague, comme il l'a fait ici, mais précise et détaillée, les actes des patriarches et des Prophètes, alors le Seigneur leur Dieu, qui est aussi le nôtre, m'aidera à lui donner des réponses convenables et spéciales sur chaque point. Maintenant Fauste, le manichéen, blâme ces personnages, et Paul, l'apôtre, les loue : c'est à chacun de voir auquel ajouter foi.
