Reply to Faustus the Manichaean
16.
If your mind is an altar, you see whose altar it is. You may see from the very doctrines and duties in which you say you are trained. You are taught not to give food to a beggar; and so your altar smokes with the sacrifice of cruelty. Such altars the Lord destroys; for in words quoted from the law He tells us what offering pleases God: "I desire mercy, and not sacrifice." Observe on what occasion the Lord uses these words. It was when, in passing through a field, the disciples plucked the ears of corn because they were hungry. Your doctrine would lead you to call this murder. Your mind is an altar, not of God, but of lying devils, by whose doctrines the evil conscience is seared as with a hot iron, 1 calling murder what the truth calls innocence. For in His words to the Jews, Christ by anticipation deals a fatal blow to you: "If ye had known what this meaneth, I desire mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless." 2

So hast du auch deinen Geist zum Altar gemacht (537,19), doch schau, für welchen Gott! Das wird erkennbar aus den Grundsätzen und Lehren, mit denen dieser Geist nach deinen Worten vertraut ist. Jene Grundsätze und Lehren verbieten etwa, einem Bettler Brot zu reichen, sodass ihr selber auf eurem Altar mitsamt diesem Opfer der Grausamkeit verbrennt, da der Herr einen solchen Altar niederreisst, indem er aus dem Gesetz (Hos. 6,6) in Erinnerung ruft, welcher Opferduft Gott willkommen ist (Mt. 9,12; 12,7): Barmherzigkeit will ich, nicht Opfer. Beachtet aber, aus welchem Anlass der Herr dieses Wort zitiert hat, nämlich als er durch ein Saatfeld ging und seine Jünger aus Hunger Ähren abzupften, was ihr gemäss eurer Lehre, mit der euer Geist vertraut ist, als Mord bezeichnet, ein Geist, der gewiss kein Altar Gottes, sondern der lügenredenden Dämonen ist, durch deren Lehren euer schlechtes Gewissen versengt und gebrandmarkt wird (cf. I Tim. 4,2), und der als Mord bezeichnet, was die Wahrheit Unschuld nennt. Denn folgende Worte brauchte der Herr den Juden gegenüber, womit er gleichzeitig euch später Geborene vernichtend traf (Mt. 12,7): Wenn ihr wüsstet, was das heisst ‛Barmherzigkeit will ich, nicht Opfer’, hättet ihr niemals Schuldlose verurteilt.
