24.

First of all, then, not only the speech of these men, but their life also, was prophetic; and the whole kingdom of the Hebrews was like a great prophet, corresponding to the greatness of the Person prophesied. So, as regards those Hebrews who were made wise in heart by divine instruction, we may discover a prophecy of the coming of Christ and of the Church, both in what they said and in what they did; and the same is true as regards the divine procedure towards the whole nation as a body. For, as the apostle says, "all these things were our examples."

24.

In diesem Zusammenhang möchte ich als erstes deutlich machen, dass nicht nur die Sprache jener Männer, sondern auch ihre Lebensführung prophetische Funktion hatten, ja dass jenes Reich des Hebräischen Volkes als Ganzes eine wahrhaft bedeutende prophetische Gestalt war, da es ja auch etwas wahrhaft Bedeutendes voraussagte. Daher müssen wir hier in allen Details nach prophetischen Ankündigungen Christi und der Kirche suchen, bei jenen Menschen, deren Herz in der Weisheit Gottes erzogen wurde (cf. Ps. 89,12), nicht nur in dem, was sie sagten, sondern auch in dem was sie taten, bei den übrigen, und damit bei allen Menschen jenes Volkes, was sich in ihnen und an ihnen durch göttliche Einwirkung vollzog. Denn all das waren, wie der Apostel sagt (I Kor. 10,6) Modellbilder für uns.
