42.

It is no excuse for this action of Lot or of his daughters that it represented the perversity which was afterwards in certain cases to be displayed. The purpose of Lot's daughters is one thing, and the purpose of God is another, in allowing this to happen that He might make some truth manifest; for God both pronounces judgment on the actions of the people of those times, and arranges in His providence for the prefigurement of the future. As a part of Scripture, this action is a prophecy; as part of the history of those concerned, it is a crime.

42.

Doch wollen wir nicht etwa die Handlungsweise Loths oder seiner Töchter damit rechtfertigen, dass sie eine Sinnbildfunktion erfüllte, indem sie die Verderbtheit gewisser Menschen späterer Zeiten ankündigte. Denn das Motiv der Töchter, jene Tat zu begehen, war das eine, das Motiv Gottes das andere; er liess sie ja geschehen, um durch sie zusätzlich auf etwas hinzuweisen; unverrückbar war also sein gerechtes Urteil über die Sünde damals lebender Menschen, gleichzeitig aber war seine Vorsehung unermüdlich daran, Symbolbilder für zukünftige Menschen vorzustellen. Somit hat jene Tat als Erzählung in der Heiligen Schrift die Funktion einer Prophetie, beurteilt man sie dagegen im Rahmen der Biographie der Täter, ist sie ein Verbrechen.
