For our part, while no one can alter our conviction that the Son of God comes from God, we might indulge a credulous disposition, to the extent of admitting the fiction, that Jesus became the Son of God at Jordan, but not that the Son of God was born of a woman. Then, again, the son said to have been born of Mary cannot properly be called the son of David, unless it is ascertained that he was begotten by Joseph. You say he was not, and therefore you must allow him not to have been the son of David, even though he were the son of Mary. The genealogy proceeds in the line of Hebrew fathers from Abraham to David, and from David to Joseph; and as we are told that Joseph was not the real father of Jesus, Jesus cannot be said to be the son of David. To begin with calling Jesus the son of David, and then to go on to tell of his being born of Mary before the consummation of her marriage with Joseph, is pure madness. And if the son of Mary cannot be called the son of David, on account of his not being the son of Joseph, still less can the name be given to the Son of God.

CHAPITRE III. JÉSUS N'ÉTANT PAS FILS DE JOSEPH, N'EST POINT FILS DE DAVID.

Pour nous, bien que personne ne puisse nous faire renoncer à la croyance que le Fils de Dieu vient de Dieu, cependant s'il fallait faire une large concession à l'ignorance malhabile, et si nous devions absolument admettre des erreurs, nous aimerions mieux Jésus devenu Fils de Dieu dans le Jourdain que naissant Fils de Dieu du sein d'une femme. Du reste, l'enfant né de Marie, s'il en est né un, ne peut être nommé fils de David, à moins qu'il ne soit prouvé qu'il a Joseph pour vrai père. Or, c'est ce que vous n'accordez pas ; il faut donc que vous renonciez à le dire fils de David. En effet, la généalogie descend d'Abraham à David, et de David à Joseph par tous les patriarches des Hébreux : mais Jésus n'étant point conçu de Joseph, comme on le lit, il n'est donc point fils de David : et Matthieu est véritablement fou de nous donner tout d'abord pour fils de David celui dont il va dire qu'il n'est point né de l'union de Joseph et de Marie. Ainsi donc, si le fils de Marie même ne peut être appelé fils de David, parce qu'il n'est pas le fils de Joseph, à combien plus forte raison ne peut-il être nommé le Fils de Dieu.
