Augustin replied: We give to the whole Old Testament Scriptures their due praise as true and divine; you impugn the Scriptures of the New Testament as having been tampered with and corrupted. Those things in the Old Testament which we do not observe we hold to have been suitable appointments for the time and the people of that dispensation, besides being symbolical to us of truths in which they have still a spiritual use, though the outward observance is abolished; and this opinion is proved to be the doctrine of the apostolic writings. You, on the other hand, find fault with everything in the New Testament which you do not receive, and assert that these passages were not spoken or written by Christ or His apostles. In these respects there is a manifest difference between us. When, therefore, you are asked why you do not receive all the contents of the New Testament, but, while you approve of some things, reject a great many in the very same books as false and spurious interpolations, you must not pretend to imitate us in the distinction which we make, reverently and in faith, but must give account of your own presumption.

CHAPITRE VIII. DIFFÉRENCE ENTRE LES CATHOLIQUES ET LES MANICHÉENS, RELATIVEMENT AU CHOIX À FAIRE DANS LES ÉCRITURES.

Augustin. Nous honorons tous les livres de l'Ancien Testament comme vrais et divins, ainsi que cela doit être, et vous, vous triez ceux du Nouveau Testament comme falsifiés et altérés. Non-seulement nous disons que tout ce que nous n'observons plus dans l'Ancien Testament, à été sagement prescrit eu égard au temps et au peuple juif, et a été pour nous, qui ne l'observons plus, la figure de ce que nous comprenons et possédons spirituellement; mais encore, nous le démontrons et l'enseignons d'après les écrits des Apôtres ; tandis que vous, vous blâmez dans les livres du Nouveau Testament tout ce que vous n'admettez pas, et affirmez que cela n'a été ni dit ni écrit par le Christ ou par ses Apôtres. Vous voyez donc quelle distance il y a entre nous et vous sous ce rapport. Aussi, quand on vous demande pourquoi vous n'acceptez pas tout dans les livres du Nouveau Testament, pourquoi, excepté le peu que vous-y prenez, vous rejetez, critiquez, accusez tout le reste, vous prétendez que ce sont des interpolations de faussaires. Ne vous appuyez donc plus sur les distinctions que nous sommes obligés de faire dans nos croyances et dans nos pratiques, mais rendez compte de votre présomptueuse témérité.
