Chapter 8.--In What Manner Christ Wills that All Shall Be One in Himself.

12. So the Son of God Himself, the Word of God, Himself also the Mediator between God and men, the Son of man, ¹ equal to the Father through the unity of the Godhead, and partaker with us by the taking upon Him of humanity, interceding for us with the Father in that He was man, ² yet not concealing that He was God, one with the Father, among other things speaks thus: "Neither pray I for these alone," He says, "but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; that they all may be one; as Thou, Father, art in me, and I in Thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that Thou hast sent me. And the glory which Thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one." ³

CHAPITRE VIII.

LE CHRIST VEUT CETTE UNION.

12. Telle est l’ineffable unité que dans le discours après la Cène, le Sauveur demandait

pour nous à son Père, lui le Fils de Dieu, le Verbe de Dieu qui, devenu Fils de l’homme, s’est constitué notre médiateur auprès de Dieu, et qui, égal à son Père en unité de nature divine, est notre frère par ressemblance de la nature humaine. Voici donc ces paroles où Jésus-Christ prie comme homme, mais où il rappelle aussi que comme Dieu il est un avec son Père: « Je ne prie pas pour eux seulement, mais encore pour ceux qui doivent croire en moi par leur parole, afin que tous ils soient un, comme vous, mon Père, en moi, et moi en vous; qu’ils soient de même un en nous, afin que le monde croie que vous m’avez envoyé. Et je leur ai donné la gloire que vous m’avez donnée, afin qu’ils soient un, comme nous sommes un (Jean, XVII, 20, 22. ) ».
