How does a murderer cleanse and sanctify the water? 1 How can darkness bless the oil? But if God is present in His sacraments to confirm His words by whomsoever the sacraments may be administered, then both the sacraments of God are everywhere valid, and evil men whom they profit not are everywhere perverse.

CHAPITRE XX. C’EST DIEU LUI-MÊME QUI BAPTISE PAR SON MINISTRE.
Comment un homicide peut-il purifier et sanctifier l’eau? Comment l’huile peut-elle être bénite par les ténèbres? Or, pourvu que Dieu reste présent à ses sacrements et à ses paroles, n’importe par qui ses sacrements soient administrés, ils conservent toujours leur validité essentielle, et les pécheurs auxquels ses sacrements restent inutiles, deviennent pécheurs aussi bien dans l’unité que dans le schisme.
