On the Advantage of Patience

15.

Charity is the bond of brotherhood, the foundation of peace, the holdfast and security of unity, which is greater than both hope and faith, which excels both good works and martyrdoms, which will abide with us always, eternal with God in the kingdom of heaven. Take from it patience; and deprived of it, it does not endure. Take from it the substance of bearing and of enduring, and it continues with no roots nor strength. The apostle, finally, when he would speak of charity, joined to it endurance and patience. "Charity," he says, "is large-souled; charity is kind; charity envieth not, is not puffed up, is not provoked, thinketh not evil; loveth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, beareth all things." ¹ Thence he shows that it can tenaciously persevere, because it knows how to endure all things. And in another place: "Forbearing one another," he says, "in love, using every effort to keep the unity of the spirit in the bond of peace." ² He proved that neither unity nor peace could be kept unless brethren should cherish one another with mutual toleration, and should keep the bond of concord by the intervention of patience.

La charité est le lien qui unit les frères; elle est le fondement de la paix, le ciment de l’unité; elle est supérieure à l’espérance et à la foi, plus élevée que les bonnes oeuvres et le martyre; elle régnera toujours avec nous auprès de Dieu dans le royaume céleste. Enlevez-lui la patience, enlevez-lui cette force secrète qui la rend capable de tout soutenir et de tout supporter, dès lors elle n’a plus de racines, plus de force, et elle périt misérablement. Aussi l’apôtre, en parlant de la charité, n’a pas manqué de lui adjoindre la patience. La charité, dit-il, est magnanime et bienveillante; elle n’est pas envieuse, elle ne s’enfle pas, (372) (1) ne s’irrite pas, ne pense pas au mal; elle aime tout, croit tout, espère tout, supporte tout (I Corint., XIII). En nous disant que la charité sait tout supporter, l’apôtre nous montre qu’elle est capable de toujours persévérer. Ailleurs, il explique plus clairement sa pensée : Supportez-vous les uns les autres avec charité; efforcez-vous de conserver l’unité de l’esprit dans le lien de la paix (Eph., IV.). On voit, par ces paroles , que les frères ne peuvent conserver l’unité et la paix qu’en se supportant les uns les autres et en maintenant à l’aide de la patience la concorde qui les unit.
