The First Epistle of Clement to the Corinthians

Chapter XIV.--We should obey God rather than the authors of sedition.

It is right and holy therefore, men and brethren, rather to obey God than to follow those who, through pride and sedition, have become the leaders of a detestable emulation. For we shall incur no slight injury, but rather great danger, if we rashly yield ourselves to the inclinations of men who aim at exciting strife and tumults, so as to draw us away from what is good. Let us be kind one to another after the pattern of the tender mercy and benignity of our Creator. For it is written, "The kind-hearted shall inhabit the land, and the guiltless shall be left upon it, but transgressors shall be destroyed from off the face of it." ¹ And again [the Scripture] saith, "I saw the ungodly highly exalted, and lifted up like the cedars of Lebanon: I passed by, and, behold, he was not; and I diligently sought his place, and could not find it. Preserve innocence, and look on equity: for there shall be a remnant to the peaceful man." ²

Erster Brief an die Korinther (BKV)

14. Kap. Schließet euch lieber Gott als den Aufrührern an!

1. Es ist daher recht und heilig, Männer, Brüder, mehr Gott Untertan zu sein, als denen zu folgen, die in Prahlerei und Abfall Führer zu verruchter Eifersucht sind. 2. Denn wir werden nicht in den nächsten besten (= geringen) Schaden, vielmehr in große Gefahr uns stürzen, wenn wir uns verwegen dem Willen von Leuten ausliefern, die es auf Streit und Zwist abgesehen haben, um uns von dem, was gut ist, abzubringen. 3. Lasst uns freundlich sein gegen uns selbst, gemäß der Freundlichkeit und Liebe unseres Schöpfers. 4. Denn es steht geschrieben; „Mildherzige werden wohnen im Lande, und Unschuldige werden in demselben bleiben, die Gottlosen aber werden daraus vertilgt werden"¹. 5. Und wiederum sagt er: „Ich sah den Gottlosen hochragend und erhaben wie die Zedern Libanons; und ich ging vorüber und siehe, er war nicht mehr, und ich suchte seinen Ort, aber ich fand ihn nicht. Bewahre die Unschuld S. 35 und schaue auf Rechtlichkeit, weil ein Erbe beschieden ist dem friedfertigen Menschen"².
