The First Epistle of Clement to the Corinthians
Chapter XVII.--The saints as examples of humility.
Let us be imitators also of those who in goat-skins and sheep-skins 1 went about proclaiming the coming of Christ; I mean Elijah, Elisha, and Ezekiel among the prophets, with those others to whom a like testimony is borne [in Scripture]. Abraham was specially honoured, and was called the friend of God; yet he, earnestly regarding the glory of God, humbly declared, "I am but dust and ashes." 2 Moreover, it is thus written of Job, "Job was a righteous man, and blameless, truthful, God-fearing, and one that kept himself from all evil." 3
But bringing an accusation against himself, he said, "No man is free from defilement, even if his life be but of one day." 4 Moses was called faithful in all God's house; 5 and through his instrumentality, God punished Egypt 6 with plagues and tortures. Yet he, though thus greatly honoured, did not adopt lofty language, but said, when the divine oracle came to him out of the bush, "Who am I, that Thou sendest me? I am a man of a feeble voice and a slow tongue." 7 And again he said, "I am but as the smoke of a pot." 8

Erster Brief an die Korinther (BKV)
17. Kap. Die Propheten, Abraham, Moses, Job, Vorbilder der Demut.
1. Wir wollen Nachahmer sein auch derjenigen, die in Ziegen- und Schaffellen einherzogen und die Ankunft Christi verkündeten; wir meinen die Propheten Elias, Elisäus und dazu noch Ezechiel, ferner die ein gutes Zeugnis erhalten haben (von Gott). 2. Ein herrliches Zeugnis wurde dem Abraham gegeben, Freund Gottes wurde er zubenannt, und er sprach die Herrlichkeit Gottes betrachtend in Demut: „Ich aber bin Erde und Asche"1. 3. Ferner steht auch über Job also geschrieben: „Job aber war gerecht und untadelig, wahrheitsliebend, gottesfürchtig, von allem Bösen ferne"2. 4. Aber er selbst klagt sich an mit den Worten: „Keiner ist rein von Schmutz, auch wenn sein Leben nur einen Tag dauert"3. 5. Moses wurde treu in seinem (Gottes) ganzen Hause genannt, und durch seinen Dienst strafte Gott Ägypten durch die Geißeln und Plagen, (die er) gegen sie (sandte); aber auch er führte, obwohl hochgeehrt, keine hochfahrenden Reden, sondern sprach, als ihm die Offenbarung im Dornbusch gegeben wurde: „Wer bin ich, dass Du mich sendest? Ich habe eine schwache Stimme und eine schwere Zunge"4. 6. Und wieder sagt er: „Ich aber bin Dunst, (der) von einem Kochtopfe (aufsteigt)"5.
