The First Epistle of Clement to the Corinthians

Chapter XXVIII.--God Sees All Things: Therefore Let Us Avoid Transgression.

Since then all things are seen and heard [by God], let us fear Him, and forsake those wicked works which proceed from evil ¹ desires; ² so that, through His mercy, we may be protected from the judgments to come. For whither can any of us flee from His mighty hand? Or what world will receive any of those who run away from Him? For the Scripture saith in a certain place, "Whither shall I go, and where shall I be hid from Thy presence? If I ascend into heaven, Thou art there; if I go away even to the uttermost parts of the earth, there is Thy right hand; ³ if I make my bed in the abyss, there is Thy Spirit." ⁴ Whither, then, shall anyone go, or where shall he escape from Him who comprehends all things?

28. Kap. Fürchtet den allgegenwärtigen Gott!

1. Da er also alles sieht und hört, wollen wir ihn fürchten und die schmutzigen Begierden nach schlechten Werken aufgeben, damit wir durch sein Erbarmen Schutz finden vor den kommenden Gerichten. 2. Denn wohin kann einer aus uns fliehen vor seiner starken Hand? und welche Welt wird aufnehmen einen Überläufer, der ihm entronnen? Es sagt nämlich einmal die Schrift: 3. „Wohin werde ich entkommen und wo mich verbergen vor seinem Angesicht? Wenn ich hinaufsteige in den Himmel, bist Du dort; wenn ich wegziehe an die Grenzen der Erde, ist Deine Rechte dort, und wenn ich mein Lager bereite in der Unterwelt, so ist Dein Geist dort“¹. 4. Wohin also soll man fliehen, und wo soll man entrinnen dem, der das All umspannt?
