The Pastor of Hermas

Chap. VI.

"But I, the angel of repentance, say to you, Fear not the devil; for I was sent," says he, "to be with you who repent with all your heart, and to make you strong in faith. Trust God, ¹ then, ye who on account of your sins have despaired of life, and who add to your sins and weigh down your life; for if ye return to the Lord with all your heart, and practice righteousness the rest of your days, ² and serve Him according to His will, He will heal your former sins, and you will have power to hold sway over the works of the devil. But as to the threats of the devil, fear them not at all, for he is powerless as the sinews of a dead man. Give ear to me, then, and fear Him who has all power, both to save and destroy, ³ and keep His commandments, and ye will live to God." I say to him, "Sir, I am now made strong in all the ordinances of the Lord, because you are with me; and I know that you will crush all the power of the devil, and we shall have rule over him, and shall prevail against all his works. And I hope, sir, to be able to keep all these commandments ⁴ which you have enjoined upon me, the Lord strengthening me." "You will keep them," says he, "if your heart be pure towards the Lord; and all will keep them who cleanse their hearts from the vain desires of this world, and they will live to God."

6. Kap. Auch frühere Sünder können mit Gottes Hilfe die Versuchungen des Teufels überwinden.

1. „Ich aber, der Engel der Buße, sage euch: Fürchtet den Teufel nicht. Denn ich wurde gesandt, auf dass ich mit euch sei, die sich aus ganzem Herzen bekehren, und dass ich euch stärke im Glauben. 2. Vertrauet also auf Gott, die ihr wegen einer Sünden die Hoffnung auf das Leben aufgeben musstet, da ihr in Sünden weiter gelebt und euer Leben belastet habt; denn, wenn ihr euch von ganzem Herzen zum Herrn bekehret und die Gerechtigkeit übet¹ in den übrigen Tagen eures Lebens, und wenn ihr ihm recht dienet nach seinem Willen, dann wird er Heilung schaffen für eure früheren Sünden, und ihr werdet Macht bekommen, über die Werke des Teufels Herr zu werden. Die Drohung des Teufels braucht ihr gar nicht zu fürchten; denn er ist ohne Kraft wie die Sehnen eines Toten. 3. So höret denn auf mich, fürchtet den Allmächtigen, der retten und ins Verderben² stürzen S. 228 kann und haltet diese Gebote, dann werdet ihr das Leben in Gott haben.“ 4. Ich sagte ihm dann: „Herr, nun bin ich gestärkt in allen Gerechtsamen des Herrn, weil du mit mir bist; und ich weiß, dass du alle Macht des Teufels zerbrechen wirst, dass wir Herr sein werden über ihn und alle seine Werke überwinden werden. Auch hoffe ich, o Herr, dass ich imstande bin, alle Gebote. die du mir aufgetragen hast, zu halten, da der Herr mir Kraft. verleiht.“ 5. „Du wirst sie halten“, schloss er, „wenn dein Herz in Lauterkeit hingerichtet ist zum Herrn; auch werden alle die, welche ihr Herz gereinigt haben von den eitlen Begierden dieser Welt, sie halten und in Gott leben.“
