3.

Again, when Peter, accompanied by John, had looked upon the man lame from his birth, before that gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, sitting and seeking alms, he said to him, "Silver and gold I have none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk. And immediately his legs and his feet received strength; and he walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God." ¹ Then, when a multitude had gathered around them from all quarters because of this unexpected deed, Peter addressed them: "Ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this; or why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power we had made this man to walk? The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our fathers, hath glorified His Son, whom ye delivered up for judgment, ² and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he wished to let Him go. But ye were bitterly set against ³ the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you; but ye killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead, whereof we are witnesses. And in the faith of His name, him, whom ye see and know, hath His name made strong; yea, the faith which is by Him, hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all. And now, brethren, I wot that through ignorance ye did this wickedness. ⁴ ... But those things which God before had showed by the mouth of all the prophets, that His Christ should suffer, He hath so fulfilled. Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, and that ⁵ the times of refreshing may come to you from the presence of the Lord; and He shall send Jesus Christ, prepared for you beforehand, ⁶ whom the heaven must indeed receive until the times of the arrangement ⁷ of all things, of which God hath spoken by His holy prophets. For Moses truly said unto our fathers, Your Lord God shall raise up to you a Prophet from your brethren, like unto me; Him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever He shall say unto you. And it shall come to pass, that every soul, whosoever will not hear that Prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people. And all [the prophets] from Samuel, and henceforth, as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days. Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed. Unto you first, God, having raised up His Son, sent Him blessing you, that each may turn himself from his iniquities." ⁸

Peter, together with John, preached to them this plain message of glad tidings, that the promise which God made to the fathers had been fulfilled by Jesus; not certainly proclaiming another god, but the Son of God, who also was made man, and suffered; thus leading Israel into knowledge, and through Jesus preaching the resurrection of the dead, ⁹ and showing, that whatever the prophets had proclaimed as to the suffering of Christ, these had God fulfilled.

Als ferner Petrus zugleich mit Johannes den Lahmgeborenen vor der sog. Schönen Pforte des Tempels sitzen sah und um ein Almosen bitten, sprach er zu ihm: „Gold und Silber habe ich nicht, was ich aber habe, das gebe ich dir. Im Namen Jesu Christi von Nazareth stehe auf und gehe umher!“ Und sogleich wurden sein Schritt und seine Füße gefestigt, und er ging umher und betrat mit ihnen den Tempel, ging umher und sprang und pries Gott¹ , Als nun die gesamte Menge sich um sie wegen des unerwarteten Ereignisses versammelt hatte, sprach Petrus zu ihnen: „Ihr Männer von Israel, was wundert ihr euch deswegen und schaut uns an, als hätten wir aus eigener Kraft gemacht, daß dieser geht? Der Gott Abrahams, Isaaks und Jakobs, der Gott unserer Väter hat seinen Sohn verherrlicht, den ihr freilich dem Gerichte überliefert und vor dem Angesichte des Pilatus verleugnet habt, als dieser ihn frei geben wollte. Ihr aber habt den Heiligen und Gerechten belastet und begehrt, daß der Mörder euch geschenkt werde. Den Führer des Lebens habt ihr getötet. Gott aber hat ihn von den Toten auferweckt, davon sind wir Zeugen. Und im Glauben an seinen Namen hat sein Name diesen, den ihr sehet und kennt, gefestigt, und der Glaube, der von ihm kommt, hat ihm vor euch allen die Gesundheit zurückgegeben. Und nun, Brüder, weiß ich, daß ihr in Unwissenheit böse gehandelt habt; Gott aber hat erfüllt, was er durch den Mund der Propheten vorhergesagt hat, daß nämlich sein Gesalbter leiden werde. Tuet also Buße und bekehret euch, damit eure Sünden getilgt werden und euch die Zeiten der Erquickung kommen von dem Angesichte des Herrn, und er euch den für euch vorbereiteten Jesus Christus sende, den der Himmel aufnehmen muß bis zu den Zeiten der allgemeinen Verteilung, die der Herr durch S. 249seine heiligen Propheten verkündet hat. Moses nämlich spricht zu unsern Vätern: „Einen Propheten wie mich wird euch der Herr, euer Gott, erwecken aus euren Brüdern; den sollt ihr hören in allem, was er zu euch sprechen wird.“ Wahrlich, jede Seele, die jenen Propheten nicht hören wird, wird aus dem Volke getilgt werden. Und alle, die dann von Samuel an gesprochen haben, haben jene Tage verkündigt. Ihr seid die Söhne der Propheten und des Bundes, den der Herr mit unsern Vätern geschlossen hat, indem er zu Abraham sprach: „Und in deinem Samen sollen gesegnet werden alle Geschlechter der Erde.“ Für euch hat in erster Linie Gott seinen Sohn auferweckt und ihn zum Segen für euch gesandt, damit ein jeder sich von seiner Bosheit bekehre“² . Klar ist also die Predigt des Petrus, indem er mit Johannes ihnen verkündet, daß die Verheißung, die Gott den Vätern gegeben hat, durch Jesus erfüllt ist. Keinen neuen Gott verkündet er ihnen, sondern den Sohn Gottes, der Mensch geworden ist und gelitten hat, will er zu Anerkennung Israels bringen, und indem er feierlich auf die Auferstehung Jesu von den Toten hinweist, tut er kund, daß Gott alles erfüllt hat, was immer die Propheten über das Leiden des Gesalbten geweissagt haben.
