Therefore did the Lord also say to His disciples after the resurrection, "O thoughtless ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into His glory?" ¹ And again does He say to them: "These are the words which I spoke unto you while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the Psalms, concerning Me. Then opened He their understanding, that they should understand the Scriptures, and said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise again from the dead, and that repentance for the remission of sins be preached in His name among all nations." ² Now this is He who was born of Mary; for He says: "The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected, and crucified, and on the third day rise again." ³ The Gospel, therefore, knew no other son of man but Him who was of Mary, who also suffered; and no Christ who flew away from Jesus before the passion; but Him who was born it knew as Jesus Christ the Son of God, and that this same suffered and rose again, as John, the disciple of the Lord, verifies, saying: "But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing ye might have eternal life in His name," ⁴ --foreseeing these blasphemous systems which divide the Lord, as far as lies in their power, saying that He was formed of two different substances. For this reason also he has thus testified to us in his Epistle: "Little children, it is the last time; and as ye have heard that Antichrist doth come, now have many antichrists appeared; whereby we know that it is the last time. They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us: but [they departed], that they might be made manifest that they are not of us. Know ye therefore, that every lie is from without, and is not of the truth. Who is a liar, but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? This is Antichrist." ⁵

Deswegen sagt auch der Herr seinen Jüngern nach der Auferstehung: „O ihr Unverständigen und langsam von Herzen, um an alles zu glauben, was die Propheten gesprochen haben! Mußte nicht Christus dieses leiden und eingehen in seine Herrlichkeit“¹ Und wiederum spricht er zu ihnen: „Dies sind die Reden, die ich zu euch gesprochen habe, als ich noch bei euch war, daß nämlich alles erfüllt werden müsse, was im Gesetze des Moses und in den Propheten und Psalmen von mir geschrieben ist. Dann eröffnete er ihnen den Sinn, daß sie die Schriften verstanden, und sagte zu ihnen: So steht geschrieben, daß Christus leiden und von den Toten auferstehen werde, und daß in seinem Namen Vergebung der Sünden gepredigt werde bei allen Völkern“² . Das ist aber der, welcher aus Maria geboren wurde. „Denn es muß“, sagt er, „des Menschen Sohn vieles leiden, verworfen und gekreuzigt werden und am dritten Tage auferstehen“³ . Also kennt das Evangelium keinen andern Sohn des Menschen als den aus Maria, der auch gelitten hat. Aber keineswegs kannte es einen Christus, der vor dem Leiden von Jesus weggeflogen wäre, sondern den Jesus Christus, der geboren wurde, kannte es als den Sohn Gottes, und daß eben dieser gelitten hat und auferstanden ist, das bezeugt Johannes, der Jünger des Herrn, mit den Worten: „Dies aber ist S. 278geschrieben, damit ihr glaubet, daß Jesus ist der Sohn Gottes, und damit ihr glaubend das ewige Leben habet in seinem Namen“⁴ , So sah er jene gotteslästerlichen Lehren voraus, die den Herrn teilen, soweit sie es vermögen, und ihn aus zwei verschiedenen Substanzen gemacht sein lassen. Deswegen bezeugte er uns auch in seinem Briefe: „Liebe Söhne, es ist die letzte Stunde, und wie ihr gehört habt, daß der Antichrist kommt, sind jetzt viele Antichriste entstanden, woraus wir erkennen, daß es die letzte Stunde ist. Sie sind von uns ausgegangen, waren jedoch nicht von uns. Denn wenn sie von uns gewesen wären, wären sie auch bei uns geblieben; aber sie sollten offenbar werden als solche, die nicht von uns sind. Erkennet also, daß jegliche Lüge von außerhalb kommt und nicht von der Wahrheit ist. Wer ist lügnerisch, wenn nicht der, welcher leugnet, daß Jesus nicht Christus ist? Das ist der Antichrist“⁵ .
