Tome or Synodal Letter to the People of Antioch

1.

We are persuaded that being ministers of God and good stewards ye are sufficient to order the affairs of the Church in every respect. But since it has come to us, that many who were formerly separated from us by jealousy now wish for peace, while many also having severed their connection with the Arian madmen are desiring our communion, we think it well to write to your courtesy what ourselves and the beloved Eusebius and Asterius have drawn up: yourselves being our beloved and truly most-desired fellow-ministers. We rejoice at the said tidings, and pray that even if any be left still far from us, and if any appear to be in agreement with the Arians, he may promptly leave their madness, so that for the future all men everywhere may say, ‘One Lord, one faith ¹.’ For as the psalmist says, what is so good or pleasant as for brethren to dwell in unity ². But our dwelling is the Church, and our mind ought to be the same. For thus we believe that the Lord also will dwell with us, who says, ‘I will dwell with them and walk in them ³’ and ‘Here will I dwell for I have a delight therein ⁴.’ But by ‘here’ what is meant but there where one faith and religion is preached?

Schreiben an die Antiochier (BKV)

1.

Wir sind zwar überzeugt, daß ihr als Diener Gottes und gute Verwalter sämmtliche Angelegenheiten der Kirche zu ordnen geeignet seyd. Allein weil die Nachricht zu uns gelangt ist, daß sehr Viele, welche vor Kurzem aus Streitsucht von uns abgefallen sind, jetzt den Frieden wünschen, und Viele, der Ketzerei der Ariomaniten entsagend, mit uns in Verbindung zu treten wünschen; haben wir es für nöthig erachtet, dasjenige, was wir und unsere Lieben, Eusebius und Asterius, geschrieben haben, auch euerer Sanftmuth zu schreiben, (denn auch ihr seyd liebe und uns S. 314 wahrhaft sehr theuere Mitdiener,) indem wir über diese günstige Nachricht frohlocken und wünschen, daß, wenn noch Jemand von uns entfernt ist, und wenn noch Jemand mit den Arianern zusammenzukommen scheint, dieser von ihrem Unsinne eiligst sich entferne, damit endlich Alle überall sagen:¹ „Ein Herr, Ein Glaube.“ Denn was ist, wie der Psalmist sagt,² so gut und so lieblich, als wenn Brüder beisammen wohnen? Unsere Wohnung aber ist die Kirche; und es geziemt sich, daß wir dieselbe Gesinnung haben. Denn so glauben wir, daß auch der Herr bei uns wohnen werde, der da spricht:³ „In ihnen will ich wohnen und wandeln,“ und:⁴ „Da will ich wohnen, denn ich habe sie erkoren.“ Wo aber ist das „Da“, als wo Ein Glaube und Eine Religion gelehrt wird?
