On Jealousy and Envy

15.

For this is to change what you had been, and to begin to be what you were not, that the divine birth might shine forth in you, that the godly discipline might respond to God, the Father, that in the honour and praise of living, God may be glorified in man; as He Himself exhorts, and warns, and promises to those who glorify Him a reward in their turn, saying, "Them that glorify me I will glorify, and he who despiseth me shall be despised." ¹ For which glorification the Lord, forming and preparing us, and the Son of God instilling ² the likeness of God the Father, says in His Gospel: "Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, and pray for them which persecute you; that ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven, who maketh His sun to rise on the good and on the evil, and sendeth rain upon the just and on the unjust." ³ If it is a source of joy and glory to men to have children like to themselves--and it is more agreeable to have begotten an offspring then when the remaining ⁴ progeny responds to the parent with like lineaments--how much greater is the gladness in God the Father, when any one is so spiritually born that in his acts and praises the divine eminence of race ⁵ is announced! What a palm of righteousness is it, what a crown to be such a one ⁶ as that the Lord should not say of you, "I have begotten and brought up children, but they have despised me!" ⁷ Let Christ rather applaud you, and invite you to the reward, saying, "Come, ye blessed of my Father, receive the kingdom which is prepared for you from the beginning of the world." ⁸

Über Eifersucht und Neid (BKV)

Kap. 15. Nur durch einen neuen Lebenswandel im Geiste können wir Gott immer ähnlicher werden.

Denn erst dann hast du geändert, was du gewesen bist, erst dann hast du angefangen, das zu sein, was du früher nicht warst, wenn in dir die Geburt aus Gott deutlich sichtbar wird, wenn die von Gott verordnete Zucht [in dir] auch Gott dem Vater entspricht und wenn in einem ehrenvollen und rühmlichen Lebenswandel auch Gott im Menschen offenbar wird, wie er selbst ermuntert und mahnt und denen, die ihn verherrlichen, Wiedervergeltung verheißt. „Diejenigen", sagt er, „die mich verherrlichen, werde ich verherrlichen, und wer mich verachtet, wird verachtet werden"¹ . Indem uns der Herr und Sohn Gottes zu dieser Verherrlichung heranbildet und vorbereitet, legt er es uns ans Herz, Gott dem Vater ähnlich zu werden, und sagt in seinem Evangelium: „Ihr habt gehört, daß gesagt worden ist: ,Du sollst deinen Nächsten lieben und hassen deinen Feind!' Ich aber sage euch: ,Liebet eure Feinde und betet für die, die euch verfolgen, damit ihr ähnlich seid eurem Vater, der im Himmel ist, der seine Sonne aufgehen läßt über Gute und Böse und regnen läßt über Gerechte und Ungerechte]'"² Wenn es für Menschen S. 327 schon erfreulich und ruhmvoll ist, möglichst ähnliche Kinder zu haben, und die Vaterfreude dann um so größer ist, wenn die Nachkommenschaft in den Gesichtszügen dem Vater ganz und gar ähnelt, wieviel größer ist dann die Freude bei Gott dem Vater, wenn einer so dem Geiste nach geboren wird, daß in seinem rühmlichen Wandel der göttliche Adel verherrlicht wird! Welche Palme der Gerechtigkeit, welche Ruhmeskrone ist es für dich, ein solcher zu sein, von dem Gott nicht sagt: „Söhne habe ich gezeugt und erhöht, sie selbst aber haben mich verschmäht!"³ Möge dich vielmehr Christus beloben und zur Belohnung rufen mit den Worten: „Kommet, ihr Gesegneten meines Vaters, empfanget das Reich, das euch bereitet ist seit Anbeginn der Welt!"⁴
