1. Kap. Lob der Langmut.

1. „Werde langmütig und verständig“, fuhr er fort, „und du wirst erhaben sein über alle bösen Werke und nur Gerechtigkeit üben. 2. Wenn du nämlich langmütig bist, dann wird der in dir wohnende Heilige Geist rein sein, nicht verdunkelt von einem anderen bösen Geiste, sondern in einer geräumigen Behausung wohnend wird er frohlocken und freudig sein mit dem Gefäße, in dem er wohnt, und er wird Gott dienen mit vieler Freude, da er sein Glück in sich selbst hat. 3. Wenn aber irgendwie der Jähzorn sich einnistet, dann wird es alsbald dem Heiligen Geiste, der zart ist, zu enge, da er S. 210 keinen reinen Wohnort mehr hat, und er sucht von da auszuziehen. Der böse Geist sucht ihn nämlich zu ersticken, indem der Zorn ihn vergewaltigt, und so kann er dem Herrn nicht mehr dienen, wie er will. Denn in der Langmut wohnt Gott, in der Zornmütigkeit aber der Teufel. 4. Wenn nun beide Geister in einem Menschen zusammenwohnen, so ist das unzuträglich und schädlich für den, in dem sie wohnen. 5. Wenn du nämlich nur ein ganz klein wenig Absinth nimmst und ihn in einen Topf voll Honig schüttest, ist dann nicht der ganze Honig verdorben? Und zwar wird eine solche Menge Honig von dem bisschen Absinth verdorben, er nimmt dem Honig seine Süßigkeit, und dieser schmeckt dem Herrn nicht mehr, weil ihm etwas beigemischt und er so ungenießbar wurde. Wenn aber der Absinth dem Honig nicht beigegeben wird, dann behält er seine Süßigkeit und ist dem Herrn wohlbekömmlich. 6. Du siehst also, dass die Langmut viel süßer ist als Honig und dass sie gar genehm ist für den Herrn und dass er in ihr wohnt. Der Jähzorn aber ist bitter und unnütz. Wenn sich nun der Zorn vermischt mit der Langmut, dann wird diese verdorben, und das Dazukommen jenes ist dem Herrn nicht genehm.“ 7. „Ich möchte gern, o Herr, die Wirkung des Jähzorns kennen lernen“, fuhr ich fort, „damit ich mich vor ihm hüte.“ „Fürwahr“, entgegnete er, „wenn du dich vor ihm nicht hütest mit deinem Hause, dann ist all deine Hoffnung dahin. So hüte dich also vor ihm; denn ich bin mit dir. Und auch alle, die sich von ganzem Herzen bekehren, werden sich von ihm enthalten; denn auch mit ihnen werde ich sein und werde sie bewahren; denn sie alle wurden gerechtfertigt von dem heiligsten Engel.“

Chap. I.

"Be patient," said he, "and of good understanding, and you will rule over every wicked work, and you will work all righteousness. For if you be patient, the Holy Spirit that dwells in you will be pure. He will not be darkened by any evil spirit, but, dwelling in a broad region, ¹ he will rejoice and be glad; and with the vessel in which he dwells he will serve God in gladness, having great peace within himself. ² But if any outburst of anger take place, forthwith the Holy Spirit, who is tender, is straitened, not having a pure place, and He seeks to depart. For he is choked by the vile spirit, and cannot attend on the Lord as he wishes, for anger pollutes him. For the Lord dwells in long-suffering, but the devil in anger. ³ The two spirits, then, when dwelling in the same habitation, are at discord with each other, and are troublesome to that man in whom they dwell. ⁴ For if an exceedingly small piece of wormwood be taken and put into a jar of honey, is not the honey entirely destroyed, and does not the exceedingly small piece of wormwood entirely take away the sweetness of the honey, so that it no longer affords any gratification to its owner, but has become bitter, and lost its use? But if the wormwood be not put into the honey, then the honey remains sweet, and is of use to its owner. You see, then, that patience is sweeter than honey, and useful to God, and the Lord dwells in it. But anger is bitter and useless. Now, if anger be mingled with patience, the patience is polluted, ⁵ and its prayer is not then useful to God." "I should like, sir," said I, "to know the power of anger, that I may guard myself against it." And he said, "If you do not guard yourself against it, you and your house lose all hope of salvation. Guard yourself, therefore, against it. For I am with you, and all will depart from it who repent with their whole heart. ⁶ For I will be with them, and I will save them all. For all are justified by the most holy angel." ⁷
