CHAPITRE XIX. VOIE DE LA PERFECTION ( Gen. I, 14).

24. Mais d’abord « lavez-vous, purifiez-vous; faites disparaître toute souillure et de vos âmes et de mes regards, » afin que la terre intérieure s’élève. Apprenez à faire le bien; « rendez justice à l’orphelin, et maintenez le droit de la veuve ( Is. I, 16, 17), » afin que cette terre se couvre de fertiles pâturages et d’arbres chargés de fruits. Venez, je veux vous instruire; attachés au firmament du ciel, vous serez les flambeaux du monde.

Le riche demande au bon Maître ce qu’il doit faire pour obtenir la vie éternelle. Ecoute ce bon Maître que tu crois un homme et rien de plus, mais qui est bon, parce qu’il est Dieu; il te dit: « Si tu veux arriver à la vie, observe les commandements; » sépare du sol de ton coeur les eaux amères de la malice et de la corruption; garde-toi du meurtre, de l’adultère, du vol; ne porte point faux témoignage, afin que la terre paraisse et germe le respect des père et mère, et l’amour du prochain. — J’ai fait tout cela, répond le riche.

D’où viennent donc tant d’épines, si la terre est fertile? Va, déracine ces sauvages buisson (508) de l’avarice; vends ce que tu as, donne-le aux pauvres, et ton aumône te couvrira de fruits; et tu auras un trésor dans le ciel; et puis, suis le Seigneur, si tu veux être parfait et devenir le compagnon de ceux à qui il parle le langage de la sagesse, lui qui sait et te fera savoir ce que c’est que le jour, ce que c’est que la nuit, afin que les astres brillent aussi pour toi au firmament de son ciel; chose impossible, si ton coeur n’y est déjà; et là ne sera jamais ton coeur, si là n’est point ton trésor, comme te l’a dit le bon Maître ( Matth. VI, 21). Mais la tristesse se répandit sur la terre stérile, et les épines étouffèrent la parole ( Ibid. XIX, 16, 22).

25. Pour vous, race d’élection, faibles du monde, qui avez tout quitté poûr suivre le Seigneur, allez et confondez les puissances du siècle. Que vos pieds radieux marchent sur sa trace! Etincelez au firmament ( I Pierre, II, 19), afin que les cieux racontent sa gloire, en discernant la lumière des parfaits qui sont encore loin des anges, et les ténèbres des petits déjà sauvés de vos mépris! Brillez sur toute la terre! Que ce jour, éblouissant des clartés de ce soleil, annonce au jour le Verbe de sagesse, et que cette nuit soit le clair de lune qui annonce à la nuit le Verbe de science ( Ps. XVIII, 2).

La lune et les étoiles luisent sur la nuit, sans être obscurcies par ses ténèbres; elles lui donnent toute la lumière qu’elle peut recevoir. Et, comme si Dieu eût dit: Que les astres soient dans le firmament du ciel : voici soudain un grand bruit venu d’en-haut, comme un tourbillon violent, et des langues de feu rayonnent et se divisent en s’arrêtant sur la tête de chacun d’eux ( Actes, II, 2, 3): et il se fit comme un firmament d’astres possesseurs du Verbe de vie. Courez partout, flammes de sainteté, feux admirables! Car vous êtes la lumière du monde, et le boisseau ne vous couvre pas. Celui à qui vous vous êtes attachés a été exalté dans la gloire, et il vous a exaltés. Courez donc, et révélez-vous à toutes les nations.

Chapter XIX.--All Men Should Become Lights in the Firmament of Heaven.

24. But first, "Wash you, make you clean;" ¹ put away iniquity from your souls, and from before mine eyes, that the dry land may appear. "Learn to do well; judge the fatherless; plead for the widow," ² that the earth may bring forth the green herb for meat, and the tree bearing fruit; ³ and come let us reason together, saith the Lord, ⁴ that there may be lights in the firmament of heaven, and that they may shine upon the earth. ⁵ That rich man asked of the good Master what he should do to attain eternal life. ⁶ Let the good Master, whom he thought a man, and nothing more, tell him (but He is "good" because He is God)--let Him tell him, that if he would "enter into life" he must "keep the commandments;" ⁷ let him banish from himself the bitterness of malice and wickedness; ⁸ let him not kill, nor commit adultery, nor steal, nor bear false witness; that the dry land may appear, and bud forth the honouring of father and mother, and the love of our neighbour. ⁹ All these, saith he, have I kept. ¹⁰ Whence, then, are there so many thorns, if the earth be fruitful? Go, root up the woody thicket of avarice; sell that thou hast, and be filled with fruit by giving to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven; and follow the Lord "if thou wilt be perfect," ¹¹ coupled with those amongst whom He speaketh wisdom, Who knoweth what to distribute to the day and to the night, that thou also mayest know it, that for thee also there may be lights in the firmament of heaven, which will not be unless thy heart be there; ¹² which likewise also will not be unless thy treasure be there, as thou hast heard from the good Master. But the barren earth was grieved, ¹³ and the thorns choked the word. ¹⁴

25. But you, "chosen generation, ¹⁵ you weak things of the world," who have forsaken all things that you might "follow the Lord," go after Him, and "confound the things which are mighty;" ¹⁶ go after Him, ye beautiful feet, ¹⁷ and shine in the firmament, ¹⁸ that the heavens may declare His glory, dividing between the light of the perfect, though not as of the angels, and the darkness of the little, though not despised ones. Shine over all the earth, and let the day, lightened by the sun, utter unto day the word of wisdom; and let night, shining by the moon, announce unto night the word of knowledge. ¹⁹ The moon and the stars shine for the night, but the night obscureth them not, since they illumine it in its degree. For behold God (as it were) saying, "Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven." There came suddenly a sound from heaven, as it had been the rushing of a mighty wind, and there appeared cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. ²⁰ And there were made lights in the firmament of heaven, having the word of life. ²¹ Run ye to and fro everywhere, ye holy fires, ye beautiful fires; for ye are the light of the world, ²² nor are ye put under a bushel. ²³ He to whom ye cleave is exalted, and hath exalted you. Run ye to and fro, and be known unto all nations.
