Ten Homilies on the First Epistle of John

7.

"And every one that hath this hope in Him." Ye see how he hath set us our place, in "hope." Ye see how the Apostle Paul agreeth with his fellow-apostle, "By hope we are saved. But hope that is seen, is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he hope for? For if what we see not, we hope for, by patience we wait for it." ¹ This very patience exerciseth desire. Continue thou, for He continueth: and persevere thou in walking, that thou mayest reach the goal: for that to which thou tendest will not remove. See: "And every one that hath this hope in Him, purifieth ² himself even as He is pure." ³ See how he has not taken away free-will, in that he saith, "purifieth himself." Who purifieth us but God? Yea, but God doth not purify thee if thou be unwilling. Therefore, in that thou joinest thy will to God, in that thou purifiest thyself. Thou purifiest thyself, not by thyself, but by Him who cometh to inhabit thee. Still, because thou doest somewhat therein by the will, therefore is somewhat attributed to thee. But it is attributed to thee only to the end thou shouldest say, as in the Psalm, "Be thou my helper, forsake me not." ⁴ If thou sayest, "Be thou my helper," thou doest somewhat: for if thou be doing nothing, how should He be said to "help" thee?

« Et qui a cette espérance en lui ». Vous le voyez; d'après Jean nous ne sommes qu'à l'état d'espérance. Comme l'apôtre Paul est bien d'accord avec son collègue ! « Nous ne sommes sauvés qu'en espérance : or, l'espérance qui verrait, ne serait plus de l'espérance; car comment espérer ce qu'on voit déjà? Si nous espérons ce que nous ne voyons pas encore, nous l'attendons par la patience¹». La patience elle-même excite les désirs. Sois inébranlable, car Dieu est immuable. Continue à marcher, tu atteindras le but; le but vers lequel tu diriges tes pas ne changera pas de place. Voyez: « Et quiconque a cette espérance se purifie comme Dieu lui-même est pur ». Remarquez-le Jean ne nous ôte pas notre libre arbitre, puisqu'il dit: « Il se purifie ». Qui est-ce qui nous purifie, si ce n'est Dieu ? Mais Dieu ne te purifie pas malgré toi. Donc, par cela même que tu joins ta volonté à celle de Dieu, tu te purifies toi-même. Tu te purifies , par un effet, non de ton pouvoir, mais de la puissance de celui qui est venu pour habiter en toi. Néanmoins, comme il y a ici un effet de ta propre volonté, tu as une part dans l'oeuvre de ta sanctification. Et cette part consiste pour toi à dire comme le Psalmiste : Secourez-moi, ne m'abandonnez pas² ». Dès lors que tu dis: « Secourez-moi », c'est que tu agis; car si tu ne fais rien, comment peut-il venir à ton secours.
